Tutor Profile

Peter

Peter

I am a full time tutor and exam coach specialising in the social sciences with a background in teaching at both universities and secondary schools. In addition to working as a tutor I am a Town Councilor where I take on a number of roles. One of most important is as school outreach coordinator where I give talks to classes on the role of local government and the politics of sustainability. In addition I am a trustee of a local Youth group for children between 11 and 18. For my council commitments I have chaired the Environment Committee and sit on the Finance/Grants and Communications committee as well as being the Council Liaison with the local Active Travel Group and Sustainability Network.

Teaching Experience

I have over 20 years of experience teaching History, Politics, Philosophy and Religious Studies at A Level and GCSE, both in person and online. I have taught at both schools and colleges, most recently a sixth form tutorial college in Oxford, as well as public sector clients (recently Oxfordshire County Council and before this several London boroughs). I previously worked at a number of schools and universities across in London and in Oxfordshire. I have taught many home-schooled pupils, those taking re-sits, as well as ambitious students looking to get into elite universities and students looking to improve their grades to open up a wider choice of university options. In my capacity as a professional exam coach I have supported A level students in gaining entry to their first-choice university including Oxford, Cambridge and the Russell group and GCSE students in passing exams and making the step up to A level or College courses. I have also provided tuition to year 10 and 12 students, helping them through their A Levels and GCSEs in particular helping them prepare for crucial end of year exams.

Tutoring Approach

I utilise a bespoke student-centred approach in guiding students through their courses and then excelling in their exams. This personalised, student-centred approach to tutoring helps students where they most need it and in a way that is most effective by building on their strengths in order to address their weaknesses. This approach has been developed over 20 years of tutoring and is something that I am constantly improving. In order to undertake the student centred approach I conduct full assessments of each student’s interests, strengths and weaknesses and what parts of the curriculum they need to improve in the introductory session. This then allows for planning out topics for future sessions. By completing a thorough analysis of each student's ability I can optimise their strengths to transform weaknesses into assets. Each tutorial focuses on delivering course material and I always ask for input from the student as to what they are interested in and would find relevant. I attempt wherever possible to ground the tutorial in a contemporary setting for politics bringing in examples from everyday life and current events and using the most recent developments in research. For History, including orthodox and revisionist interpretations as well as those with unique political or social focus, and for Politics I focus on tracking the trends present in contemporary debates and incorporating a variety of differing viewpoints to help students gain insights in the full complexities of the subject. For Economics I look into current economic conditions and compare them to the historical data with a clear view on what we can forecast about months and years to come all the while being aware of the more theoretical aspects of the subject and the key debates currently taking place. I focus on ensuring the learning aims are achieved (as well as the examination's assessment objectives) and that all revision topics can be easily committed to memory. I do not have a designated writing technique that I try to teach pupils, instead I opt for an approach that assesses the student’s current aptitude and works on making the necessary improvements incrementally over time to peak at the critical moment - just in time for exams to begin, so as to deliver the best possible results.
