Maya

Maya is an English teacher with experience teaching KS3, GCSE and A-Level students both privately and in classroom settings. Since 2023, she has supported students online and face-to-face with English Language, Literature, history, essay writing and exam preparation, helping learners build confidence alongside stronger academic skills.

She has taught GCSE English Language and Literature at Cardinal Newman Catholic School & Sixth Form, delivering lessons across 19th-century texts, GCSE poetry, Shakespeare and analytical writing, while also supporting A-Level students with essay development, coursework and personal statements.

During her placement at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College, Maya taught GCSE English resit students and developed a strong interest in supporting disengaged learners. She focused on building positive relationships with students who lacked confidence in English and worked on making texts feel more relatable and accessible through discussion, context and adapting materials to suit different learning styles.

Maya also worked as an English teacher at EC English Language School, where she planned and delivered lessons to international students of varying ages and abilities. This strengthened her understanding of lesson planning, communication and adapting teaching approaches for different learners and educational backgrounds.

She is very familiar with AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards across both GCSE and A-Level study, and has also previously tutored GCSE History alongside English. Alongside teaching and tutoring, Maya is continuing to further specialise in English Education at UCL Institute of Education.

Her teaching style is calm, supportive and down to earth, with a focus on helping students genuinely understand ideas rather than simply memorising content for exams.

Teaching Experience

Maya’s teaching experience spans secondary, college and private tutoring environments, where she has supported a wide range of learners across English and Humanities. Her background includes teaching GCSE English Language and Literature, GCSE resit programmes and private tuition in both English and GCSE History.

At Cardinal Newman Catholic School & Sixth Form, she has taught a broad range of texts across KS3–KS5, including Shakespeare, 19th-century literature and GCSE poetry. Rather than teaching texts in a purely traditional way, Maya often combines discussion, visual media, performance and historical context to help students connect more naturally with literature. For example, when teaching Shakespeare texts such as Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet or The Tempest, she encourages students to explore key scenes through film adaptations, character discussions and thematic debates so the plays feel more alive, relatable and easier to interpret. This helps students move beyond simply memorising quotations and instead build confidence in forming their own ideas and interpretations.

Her teaching has also covered texts such as A Christmas Carol, Dr Jekyll and Hyde and Jane Eyre, alongside poetry ranging from Power and Conflict and Love and Relationships to Romantic poetry and unseen analysis. Maya enjoys helping students understand how literature connects to wider themes such as identity, power, relationships and society, making lessons feel engaging rather than overly formulaic or exam-driven.

During her time at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College, Maya worked closely with GCSE resit students, many of whom had previously disengaged from English or struggled with confidence in education. She focused heavily on relationship-building, discussion and adapting texts in ways that felt more accessible and relevant to students’ own experiences, helping many learners become more willing to participate and develop confidence in their writing and analysis.

She also gained experience teaching international learners at EC English Language School, where she planned and delivered lessons for students from a range of cultural and educational backgrounds. This strengthened her understanding of communication, lesson adaptation and inclusive teaching practice.

Alongside classroom teaching, Maya has tutored students online and face-to-face since 2023, supporting learners with revision, essay structure, exam technique and building confidence in their writing overall. She is familiar with AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications across both GCSE and A-Level study.

Tutoring Approach

Maya’s approach to teaching is centred around making students feel comfortable, capable and genuinely engaged in what they are learning. She understands that many students struggle with English not because they are “bad at it”, but because texts are often taught in ways that feel distant, overly complicated or difficult to relate to.

Her lessons focus on breaking ideas down clearly while still encouraging deeper thinking and strong academic skills. Maya often combines discussion, visual media, contextual exploration and close text analysis to help students connect more naturally with literature. When teaching Shakespeare, for example, she may use performances, film adaptations and debates around character motives or themes to help students understand the emotions and conflicts within the play, rather than simply memorising quotations without meaning.

She believes students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions and developing interpretations in their own words. Her teaching style is calm, supportive and adaptable, whether a student needs structured guidance, confidence-building, exam preparation or more challenge in developing analytical depth.

Maya also places strong importance on building positive relationships with learners, particularly students who may feel disengaged or overwhelmed by English. Her aim is not only to improve grades, but to help students become more confident thinkers, writers and communicators overall.
