Niamh

Private English and Classical Civilisation Tutor in Alness

Hi there! I'm Niamh (pronounced Neev). I'm a tutor of humanities and essay-based subjects with 5 years of experience in tutoring. My bachelor's degree is in Arabic and Linguistics and my A levels were in classical civilisations, law, psychology and sociology. I got a first in my degree and A*s in my A levels.

I took my own GCSEs A levels as a home-educated student and so learnt early on how to use the resources available online (past papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, online resources) to understand what the examiner wants and how to do really well in an exam. I love helping students to polish their skills so to do amazing in their exams, but also to learn skills in essay writing, research, time management and how to best learn that serves them throughout their time as a student and well into their careers.

Teaching Experience

I have experience helping students who are trying to achieve A*s as well as students who are looking to make an improvement further down the grade spectrum. I have helped students with all types of learning styles and am very happy to pace lessons to the individual student and their needs.

I have a focus on essay writing, evaluation and exam preparation, but I am also happy to help with gap-filling and learning content.

Personally, I love reading, writing fiction and poetry and travelling. I play the guitar and the piano and love movies and music, cooking and board games. My most recent new hobby has been learning to play backgammon!

Tutoring Approach

As we go into summer 2026 I have availability to take on new students. I teach online. I'm happy to take on students:

looking to do an intense summer to prepare for autumn retakes.student going into their second year (year 11 or year 13 respectively) who have gaps from year 1 that they want to go over and consolidate their knowledge on. and those who are going into either year 1 or 2 of their respective studies who want to get ahead either by doing a detailed reading of their relevant texts or by beginning work on past papers ahead of their class in order to be well-prepared for mocks and in-class tests.

Classes with me are very flexible and paced to the student. We aim to have as much fun as possible and try to build enjoyment of the subject. I aim to equip students with skills to be able to study independently really well.

If you would like work marked and detailed feedback I have marking time slots available also.
