Tutor Profile

Nick

Private English and Drama Tutor in Bedford

Hey there! I'm Nick, a teacher at Bedford School and a former GCSE examiner with 15 years in education. I specialise in underperforming Year 9–11s and I get results fast. Students regularly jump 2-3 grades. You may recognise me from UK television and film - perhaps explaining why my lessons are more energetic than most!

New platform launch rate: £30 for first 3 lessons while I establish my profile here. My standard rate is £60.

Outside tutoring, I create GCSE English teaching content online and have built a community of over 2,000 subscribers, with 150,000+ views across 150+ GCSE videos. I've also successfully launched and run a student-led podcast, which reflects the same thing parents value in my tutoring: clarity, motivation, and getting teenagers to actually engage.

Teaching Experience

Some of what parents and students say:

"With Nick's help over 6 months, my son's grades improved from potential Grade 5s to very strong 8s. Amazing! Plus my son actually enjoyed the lessons!"

"Following just 3 sessions, my son's Year 11 mock exam results for English Language improved from Grade 5 to Grade 7. He said: 'I knew I understood this. I just didn't know how to show it.' Nick's highly focused, tactical approach has given my son confidence as he prepares for his summer exams."

"Within a term Nick managed to help my daughter go from 5/6 in English Language to an 8 in her mocks, and from 4/5 in English Literature to a 6+. Truly remarkable. Most importantly, she is now interested in the topics and always says she enjoys her lessons."

Tutoring Approach

I believe my job as a tutor is to:

• Teach • Reinforce basic learning • Mentor • Coach

I often work with students who have the ability but have been overlooked in large class sizes, or who have lost confidence in English due to low grades and lack of individual guidance. Confidence plays a massive part in success in the exam period, and that's something I always instil in my pupils.

I see myself as an exam coach, mentor, and older brother: personable, trustworthy and knowledgeable. My students are genuinely important to me, and I do whatever it takes to help them not only reach their target grades but exceed what they believe they're capable of.

While enrolled, students also have access to me daily via Microsoft Teams, so help is never a week away when they need it most.

Students also get access to my GCSE video support library: 150+ videos and 150,000+ views. Support is there all week, not just during the session.

Who I work best with:

I work especially well with students who are capable but underperforming due to confidence, structure, or exam technique, as well as motivated students aiming for the top grades who want sharper analysis and more precise writing.

What you'll get each week:

• A focused 60-minute intensive session • A clear weekly plan and targeted practice • Marking and feedback with specific next steps • Daily access via Microsoft Teams between sessions • Access to my GCSE video support library while enrolled

We were looking for an English tutor for our son in year 10 to help prepare for GCSEs. We found Nick on a tutoring site and thought he would be a good fit, the excellent reviews helped! Our son was reluctant to start tutoring but after only one lesson he said how much he enjoyed it and would be happy to continue. We’re a few of months in and have seen such progress in our son’s confidence and enthusiasm. We were delighted when he told us he’d got the highest mark in the class at the end of year 10. We’d recommend Nick was a few reasons, he quickly built up a rapport with our son, putting him at ease, he’s patient, kind and feedback is always constructive, he has clear enthusiasm for the subject and knows was examiners are looking for at GCSE. We would not hesitate to recommend Nick, he’s been brilliant.

I am very pleased with the progress my son has made with Nicholas as his GCSE English tutor. Nicholas has a strong understanding of the GCSE curriculum and explains key concepts clearly and effectively. He is patient, well-prepared, and adapts each lesson to suit my son’s learning needs and exam requirements. Nicholas has helped my son develop stronger skills in reading comprehension, writing structure, and exam technique, which has noticeably improved his confidence and performance. The lessons are focused yet engaging, and my son feels well supported and motivated to improve. I highly recommend Nicholas as a GCSE English tutor and truly appreciate his commitment, professionalism, and positive impact on my son’s academic progress.

Nick has been fantastic with my 14 year old son. Not only has he helped him make clear progress in GCSE English Language, but he’s also massively improved Harry’s confidence and willingness to engage with learning, which is huge given Harry’s medical and mental health needs. Nick is calm, patient, and genuinely understands how to adapt his approach to the learner in front of him. Harry has completed his first full AQA Language Paper 1 with measurable improvements, but just as importantly, he feels more comfortable and capable tackling the work. We couldn’t be happier and would highly recommend Nick to any parent, especially those whose child needs a tutor who truly “gets it.”

Thank you so much James! Genuinely my favourite feedback I’ve ever received! Means a lot! :)

Nick has been tutoring my daughter, who has recently been diagnosed with inattentive ADHD, in English Language for 5 months. She struggled with her end of year tests in summer last year, and was given a 3 in English Language (end of year 10). My daughter likes the active nature of the tutorials, and she completes answers to questions during the tutorial, which increases her confidence. Her last GCSE prediction was a 6, which is a huge improvement. This has increased her confidence going into GCSE mocks in a few weeks.

Tutor response

Thank you so much for that feedback! I was so pleased she went from a 3 to a 6!
