Hi, I'm Ruby, a mechanical engineer turned sustainability consultant with a passion for teaching. I graduated from Cardiff University with a 2:1 in Mechanical Engineering, and I've spent the last two years working as a sustainability consultant, helping organisations navigate the practical side of environmental change. This September, I'll be starting my Master's at Imperial College London in Climate Change, Management, and Finance, deepening my expertise in one of the most important challenges of our time.

Outside of work, I'm an avid reader and animal lover, and I genuinely enjoy spending time with children. I find their curiosity and energy infectious! I believe learning should be engaging, practical, and tailored to how each student thinks, and I bring that same problem-solving mindset from engineering into how I explain concepts and break down tricky topics.

I'd love to help students build both confidence and a real understanding of the subjects they're working on.

I spent time as a STEM Ambassador, working with young girls to get them excited about engineering. A lot of them didn't think engineering was "for them," so a big part of the role was breaking that down showing them it's actually creative, hands-on, and open to anyone. I learned a lot about how to explain technical stuff in a way that clicks, without dumbing it down.

I've also mentored placement students in my job as a sustainability consultant. That's meant a lot of one-on-one time explaining things, answering questions, and helping them build confidence in their own work rather than just giving them answers. And honestly, babysitting family and friends' kids over the years has probably taught me just as much patience, reading the room, and figuring out how to keep someone's attention when they'd rather be doing literally anything else.

Between all of that, I've picked up a lot about how to explain things clearly, keep people engaged, and adjust depending on who I'm talking to which I think matters just as much as knowing the subject itself.

I believe the best learning happens when a subject feels relevant, not just something to memorise for a test. My engineering background has taught me to break big, complicated problems into smaller, manageable steps and that's exactly how I like to teach. Rather than just handing over the answer, I like to work through the problem alongside the student, asking questions that help them think it through themselves, so they walk away actually understanding the "why," not just the "how."

I also think confidence matters just as much as knowledge. A lot of students shut down when they feel like they're "bad" at a subject, so I try to create a relaxed, judgement-free space where getting something wrong is just part of figuring it out not something to be embarrassed about. I'm patient, I go at the student's pace, and I'll always find a different way to explain something if the first way didn't land.

Every student learns differently, so I try to stay flexible using real-world examples, visuals, or working through practice problems, depending on what actually clicks for that person. My goal isn't just to help with the immediate homework or exam, but to build a genuine, lasting understanding and a bit more confidence along the way.
