Tutor Profile

Alexander

Private Biology and Chemistry Tutor in Mansfield

Hello! I'm a scientist working as a DNA analyst for the UK Health Security Agency, alongside studying for a part-time PhD in Bioinformatics.

I am also a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with experience teaching both GCSE and A-level Biology. My background allows me to combine real-world scientific experience with a strong understanding of the exam board curricula, helping students not only understand the subject but also develop the skills needed to succeed in their exams.

I began tutoring during my undergraduate studies and have continued ever since. I take great pride in seeing my students grow in confidence, overcome areas they find challenging and achieve their academic goals.

Teaching Experience

I have experience teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics at GCSE level, as well as Biology at A-level, working with students of a range of abilities and academic goals.

My classroom experience has involved planning and delivering lessons, supporting students with challenging topics and helping them prepare for assessments and examinations. I also volunteered to run after-school tutoring sessions for students who wanted additional support but were unable to afford private tuition.

My teaching experience has strongly shaped my approach to tutoring, allowing me to meet students at their individual level of understanding and support them in fulfilling their potential. Through careful planning and regular progress monitoring, I adapt my teaching to ensure students continue to develop their knowledge, confidence and ability.

I particularly enjoy helping students who may initially find Biology difficult or overwhelming, breaking complex topics down into manageable steps and helping them become more confident in their own abilities.

Tutoring Approach

Every student has different strengths, learns in different ways and progresses at their own pace. For this reason, I believe tutoring should be tailored to the individual.

I offer a free introductory session to get to know the student, discuss their current attainment and predicted grade, identify areas for improvement and create a clear plan to help them reach their potential. This also gives me the opportunity to understand how they learn best and adapt my lessons accordingly.

Each lesson builds upon previous sessions. I regularly revisit earlier topics to check understanding and identify any areas that may need further reinforcement.

My lessons focus on both subject knowledge and examination technique. In my experience, many students understand the content but find it difficult to translate that knowledge into marks in an exam. I therefore place strong emphasis on understanding the requirements of the relevant exam board, interpreting mark schemes and developing effective exam technique.

My aim is not simply to help students memorise information, but to build their understanding, confidence and independence. Throughout the tutoring process, I am also happy to maintain regular communication with parents and provide updates on progress and areas for continued development.

I am very happy with my new tutor. He has really helped me in understanding the A Level Biology material, including exam questions and starter questions every lesson to refresh on material from the previous lesson and to ingrain the material from this lesson. Would really recommend!

So good to have you tutor Gabi, I believe you are making a difference. As she is old enough to take responsibility for her own learning, I do not need to be involved in what you are covering with her but it is good that you adapt to her needs and concentrate on what she needs to support her school learning. Thank you Alex.

Tutor response

Thank you kindly Paula, Gabi is an exceptional student, I'm confident she will go far after her studies!

Alex is a honest, polite and decent human being. He is punctual, reliable and passionate about his chosen subject. He has been instrumental in improving my son's Science grades and my son has really enjoyed their time together. I recommend him strongly as a tutor that firstly, has a broad and comprehensive knowledge of his subject material and who, consequently, teaches your child with passion and enthusiasm.

Tutor response

Thank you Jay for the very kind words. It was a real pleasure working with Wade and getting to know you both
