Tutor Profile

Private Sociology and Criminology Tutor in London

I am a qualified teacher, senior leader and experienced private tutor. Alongside my teaching career, I hold a PhD in Criminology and was previously a Senior Examiner for AQA A Level Sociology. This gives me a unique insight into not only what students need to know, but how they need to apply their knowledge in order to achieve the highest possible marks.

I have been privately tutoring students for several years and have a particularly strong track record of supporting students who are neurodiverse or have additional learning needs. Many of my private tutees have needed a more personalised approach to learning, and through tailored 1-1 support, all of my private tutees have achieved A*-B grades.

Teaching Experience

I have worked with students of a wide range of abilities, from those who need additional support with confidence-building to high-achieving students aiming for A*/A grades.

I am currently employed as a senior leader and qualified teacher in an Outstanding school with sixth form. My students consistently achieve results above the national average, and in the most recent examination results, two of my students achieved full marks. I have a strong track record of helping students make significant academic progress and develop the skills needed to succeed in demanding examinations.

My experience as a former Senior Examiner for AQA A Level Sociology is particularly valuable to my students. I understand the examination process from both sides of the classroom and the marking desk, including what examiners are looking for, how marks are awarded and the common mistakes that prevent students from reaching the highest bands.

I also have several years of experience as a private tutor. This has allowed me to develop a personalised approach that is very different from whole-class teaching. I can identify exactly where a student is struggling, adapt my explanations to suit how they learn and focus our time on the areas that will make the greatest difference to their progress.

I have also taught WJEC Level 3 Criminology and have experience tutoring students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I have supported students with advanced academic skills, including critical analysis, essay writing, research methods and developing strong academic arguments.

My PhD in Criminology further strengthens my subject expertise and allows me to support students across a wide range of academic levels with both subject knowledge and academic writing.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring is supportive and completely student-centred. I want my students to feel that tutoring is a safe space where they can ask questions, make mistakes and say, "I don't understand" without ever feeling embarrassed or judged.

I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every student is different, so I take the time to understand their strengths, areas for development, goals and preferred way of learning. I then tailor each session accordingly. For students who are neurodiverse or have additional learning needs, I am particularly mindful of adapting my teaching, breaking down complex concepts and providing explanations and resources that work for them as individuals.

For students preparing for exams, I place a strong emphasis on developing both knowledge and exam technique. Knowing the content is only part of the process; students also need to know how to use that knowledge effectively, how to structure their answers, how to analyse and evaluate, and ultimately how to turn their understanding into marks. My experience as an AQA Senior Examiner means I can give students very clear, practical guidance on how to do this.

I also believe that progress comes from consistency and active engagement between tutoring sessions. Therefore, I set students purposeful work to complete independently and expect this to be completed before our next session. I then mark their work carefully and provide detailed, constructive feedback so that students understand not only what they have done well, but exactly how they can improve. This allows me to monitor progress closely and ensures that each session builds on the last.

I also maintain a close and positive relationship with parents. Thus, I provide regular weekly updates so parents know what we have covered, how their child is progressing, what they have done particularly well and any areas that we are continuing to work on. I believe that keeping parents informed creates a strong partnership between the student, tutor and family and helps everyone work towards the same goals.
