Tutor Profile

Megan

Private English Literature Tutor in Penarth

I am an engaging, warm and encouraging literature specialist with over ten years of experience tutoring around the country and hold both a BA (2014) and MA (2017) from King's College London in English Literature and Medieval Studies respectively.

Teaching Experience

I offer lessons to A-Level English students and maintain a literature specialism. I am experienced in the WJEC, Edexcel, AQA, and OCR specifications, and have tutored internationally in the American college system, as well as international schools in China. I provide editing and proofreading to all of my students, and give detailed feedback on essay drafts. I have solid experience in the university application and personal statement writing process and have helped numerous students make that exciting leap into higher education.

Texts regularly taught - (This list is not exhaustive and I'm happy to broach new material):

King Lear, Macbeth, Henry IV Parts 1 & 2, Hamlet, Richard III, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, A Doll's House, A Streetcar Named Desire, Doctor Faustus, The Canterbury Tales, Paradise Lost, The poetry of Sylvia Plath, The poetry of Ted Hughes, The poetry of Philip Larkin, The poetry of Carol Ann Duffy, The poetry of Christina Rossetti , The poetry of Seamus Heaney, The poetry of Owen Sheers, 'Poems of the Decade', Jane Eyre, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bloody Chamber, Oliver Twist, Atonement, On Chesil Beach, The Great Gatsby, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, The Handmaid's Tale, In Cold Blood, Breakfast at Tiffany's, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Never Let Me Go, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Children of Men.

Tutoring Approach

I enjoy creating long lasting relationships with my clients, and foster a collaborative, flexible and personal teaching dynamic. I try to avoid rigid 'tutor' and 'student' definitions in order to create a relaxed environment where working together critically and creatively is key.

I like to foster a creative and exploratory approach to English that is solidly grounded in the curriculum, but that also goes beyond the scope of the classroom to ensure that my students stand out and shine in both their writing and in class. This method involves sharing ideas and research in literary theory and linguistics, considering context in dynamic ways, and offering nuanced perspectives on texts that spark excitement. As such, I have been successful in encouraging previously reluctant students to engage with English at A-level, as well as in challenging already high-achieving students to take that extra step into the highest bands and grade boundaries. I believe in the transformative power of literature and teach it as a tool through which young people can discover themselves and the world we live in.

Honestly don't even know where to start, Megan was a God sent to us at the time when my daughter was literally failing Eng Lit A-Level, we found her on First Tutor and she helped turned that to an excellent A. She's a passionate and excellent teacher my daughter wouldn't have got the grades for University had it not been for her help with only few months to final exams. I can't recommend her enough. Thanks so much for everything Megan!!
