Tutor Profile

William

Teacher of Classics and Mathematics

I am an Oxford graduate with an Honours degree in Literae Humaniores, now converted to a Masters Degree. I hold a PGCE from Nottingham University and have over 40 years' experience in the classroom and online, teaching Latin to GCSE and A level, and Ancient Greek and Mathematics to GCSE. I am married with three adult daughters and enjoy a variety of activities, from singing, concerts and theatre-going to gardening, cooking and proofreading.

Teaching Experience

I have worked primarily within the private sector, teaching as Head of Department in Prep schools and Secondary schools. My most recent role has been as Head of Classics at Moreton Hall in Shropshire, where I have taught Latin from beginner to A level, Ancient Greek to GCSE and Classical Civilisation A level. Prior coming to Moreton, amongst other posts, I taught Latin and Greek to Common Entrance and 13+ Scholarship as Head of Classics at Packwood Haugh prep school in Shropshire, Latin and History as Head of Department in both subjects at Ashfold School in Buckinghamshire, Latin to GCSE at Kenilworth School and All Hallows School in Macclesfield, History, English and Latin at Adcote School near Shrewsbury, and Latin at King Edward's School, Bath, and King's School Chester, where I also taught Ancient Greek. In addition I have taught a number of individuals online via Zoom and Google Meet, taking them to examination level in Mathematics and the Classics, and have hosted or visited individuals in their own homes to assist with their learning.

Tutoring Approach

I believe every student has individual abilities and needs and so my tutoring reflects this, as I focus my methods and explanations on the things that the student most needs help to understand. I expect the student to want to learn and so put in the time to master the material necessary for them to succeed, but I am a patient and understanding teacher and hope this alleviates somewhat any fear of failure; instead I encourage them to see mistakes as opportunities to learn, which I hope serves as a useful lesson beyond my teaching.

William was better than excellent. Without a doubt his help contributed to our daughters GCSE and A'level results and her subsequent admission to Cambridge. During the course she continued to see him, not only because of the academic help he gave her, but she enjoyed the intellectual meeting of minds at the level she had reached. It is a rare talent to teach a 14 year old well and still be teaching them well 4-5 years later, covering basic to advanced with equal skill!

Bill was an excellent and extremely patient tutor. My son needed last minute support for his Common Entrance Latin exam (13+) and Bill was available, via Skype. It all went incredibly smoothly, with my son getting a lot of invaluable coaching for the exam, with identification of his key areas of weakness for him to continue working on. I would highly recommend Bill.

Tutor response

Thank you, Helen. Harry was a very willing and patient pupil and it was a real pleasure working with you both.
