I use a C-P-A approach. Concrete (real objects and life examples), pictorial (pictures and diagrams) to abstract (mathematical equations). For example, I use scales and blocks to show how Equations work, or positive and negative squares to explain Negative Numbers, or Algebra Tiles fro add, subtract and multiply algebraic terms.
