Tutor Profile

Matthew

Private English and Maths Tutor in Birmingham

I am a dedicated and experienced tutor with seven years of one‑to‑one and small‑group teaching experience, built on a foundation of twelve years as a full‑time primary school teacher. Now working as a freelance educator across a wide range of Birmingham primary schools, I bring deep curriculum knowledge, strong classroom practice, and a calm, supportive approach that helps pupils grow in confidence and make meaningful progress. My background allows me to adapt quickly to different school settings, understand individual learning needs, and deliver engaging, structured support that makes learning enjoyable and effective.

Teaching Experience

I bring a wide range of teaching experience from Birmingham, Sandwell and Wiltshire, having taught every year group across the primary phase and led both maths and phase teams in two different schools. Over the years I’ve developed a strong understanding of how children learn at each stage, and this has shaped my tutoring work, where I support pupils with SEND, prepare children for the 11+, and help Year 6 pupils build confidence ahead of their SATs. My current students range from ages 7 to 11, and I’m proud to have an excellent success rate in helping children achieve their goals, whether that’s passing the 11+ or making strong progress in their SATs. This breadth of experience allows me to tailor support carefully, meet each child exactly where they are, and help them move forward with clarity and confidence.

Tutoring Approach

I take a warm, calm and confidence‑building approach to one‑to‑one tutoring, always starting by getting to know each child as an individual — their strengths, worries, interests and the way they learn best. My sessions are friendly, structured and reassuring, with clear, achievable steps that help children feel capable and proud of what they can do. I focus on building understanding rather than rushing, using gentle questioning, modelling and encouragement to help pupils become independent thinkers. Above all, I create a positive, supportive atmosphere where children feel safe to try, make mistakes and grow, so learning becomes something they enjoy rather than something they fear.
