Tutor Profile

Ruth

Private Geography Tutor in London

2026 RESULTS: 92% of my private A-Level tutees were awarded A/A*, while my school cohort achieved 84% A*-B grades.

I am a qualified Geography teacher (QTS), Head of Department and regular GCSE and A-Level examiner, with over 12 years experience teaching in an Ofsted Outstanding school in South London.

I studied Geography with Management at Loughborough University, specialising in Human Geography. Upon graduation, I was awarded the Most Outstanding Student across a cohort of 130 students in recognition of my contribution to the department. I subsequently completed my PGCE at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, and qualified as a teacher.

Teaching Experience

I have over a decade of experience teaching and tutoring Geography at GCSE and A-Level. Since 2015, I have taught the full A-Level Geography syllabus and have extensive experience preparing students for their final examinations.

I mark exam scripts in the summer terms, and I also lead on the marking and moderation of the NEA (coursework) component at borough level. As a regular examiner for GCSE and A-Level Geography, I have first-hand experience of the assessment process and a clear understanding of what makes the higher-level answers. This helps identify where students are currently losing marks and more importantly, how to improve.

I tutor across AQA, Edexcel, OCR and IGCSE specifications and have a detailed understanding of the knowledge, skills and assessment requirements needed at each level.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring is tailored to the individual needs of each student. Whether they need to address knowledge gaps, consolidate their understanding of the specification or strengthen their exam technique, I structure lessons around their specific priorities.

In the first session, I use a Personal Learning Checklist (PLC) to identify areas of strength and weakness and establish clear priorities for future lessons. I then use a combination of targeted teaching, retrieval practice and exam-style questions to help students develop both their knowledge and their ability to apply it.

A particular focus is placed on turning knowledge into marks. Students regularly practice past-paper questions and work with mark schemes and examiner reports to understand assessment criteria, recognise what successful answers look like and improve the precision and quality of their own responses. Where appropriate, I also use teacher-only examination resources to provide additional opportunities for targeted practice.

Quite simply, Ruth has been an excellent tutor. She played a key role in helping our daughter achieve the top mark in her NEA coursework and an A in her exam by refining her exam technique. We are sure this wouldn’t have been possible without her support. The boost in our daughter’s confidence when tackling exam questions has been remarkable. Ruth is also extremely personable and we all looked forward to her visits. We hope to use her again for our son later in 2026.

Ruth has had a number of sessions with my daughter in the run up to her Geography A-level. My daughter's confidence and exam technique has greatly improved. She is heading into the exams feeling positive and calm. Ruth has been great to communicate with, responsive and flexible, and is clearly very experienced as a teacher and tutor. I would recommend her highly.

Ruth has been a lifesaver. Not only did she improve my daughter's A-level grade from a C to an A* in just a couple of months, she is now supporting and boosting the confidence of my younger son in Y13. Ruth is extremely friendly and a pleasure to chat to, as well as being an expert in her subject and knowledgable of the Geography curriculum. Her lessons are engaging and professional, and my children love learning from her. The use of past exam questions from the start help challenge them and prepare them well for the exam. I could not recommend her more as a tutor and I have already passed her number onto many of my friends who speak just as highly of her. Thanks Ruth!

Tutor response
