Tutor Profile

I am a retired Chartered Engineer with degrees in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I worked as a Maths Mentor in a Leicester state school for a number of terms following retirement and I have enhanced DBS clearance.

In my time with First Tutors I received 125 five-star reviews. I have 10 years’ tutoring experience, both face-to-face and online. Currently, I offer online tutoring only.

As a Chartered Engineer, I worked in the power generating industry for approximately thirty five years and during that time, the use of mathematics within a practical context was an integral part of my work. I am a member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and am well placed to understand the relevance and importance of mathematics and the difficulties which arise in its interpretation and application.

My enjoyment of mathematics developed throughout my engineering career and my time as an Open University student gave me first-hand experience of dealing with mathematical topics which, at first sight, appear difficult to understand.

Teaching Experience

Following retirement, I worked for a number of terms in a Leicester secondary school as a Maths Mentor. My role supported that of the full-time teaching staff by working one-to-one and in small groups with Years 12 and 13 GCSE resit students, Year 11 GCSE and AS level students.

In my private work, I am/have been working with students studying general numeracy, QTS numeracy, Functional Skills, GCSE/IGCSE (Foundation and Higher; Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 plus Year 12 resit), National 5, Level 2 Further Mathematics, Year 1/AS level and Year 2 A level (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CAIE, SQA, WJEC and CCEA). The majority are/have been school/college based with others being mature students and home-schooled.

In recent years, as I have reduced my availability, most requests from parents/guardians have been for students in years 7 to 11 and so my timetable is focused around this area of study. This is why, currently, I am advertising secondary and GCSE only. Occasionally, students with whom I have worked at GCSE level request support for AS and A level study, and I offer what I have available at that time.

Tutoring Approach

I listen carefully and encourage tutees to ask questions so misunderstandings can be addressed. Together, we identify gaps in knowledge and focus on these areas to improve understanding and learning.

I encourage tutees to have confidence in their own abilities.

My two daughters find the lessons very useful and helpful. We are very happy to have such a good teacher. Gregory’s teaching method is very clear and easy to understand, which has really helped them build confidence in maths. I hope my daughters will do very well in their GCSE exams thanks to his support and guidance.

Greg is amazing! He made my child to go from a predicted 4 in her GCSEs to an actual 6 on her results in a period of only 3 months. That’s why we’re working with him again.

My son has had a few sessions now with Gregory and things seem to be going very well. I wish we had got a tutor for my son sooner as his GCSEs are rapidly approaching. My son tells me that the lessons he's had so far with Gregory has helped him with his mock exam. Gregory is very calm and supportive. He works through the lesson in a very patient and structured way regularly checking on my son's understanding. He follows up with a print-out of the lesson and GCSE worksheets for my son to work through to consolida**Contact Detail Removed**arning.
