Tutor Profile

Becky

Private Psychology and Special Needs Tutor in Banbury

Qualified and highly experienced SEN tutor, specialising in dyslexia tutoring and diagnostic assessments. I teach reading, writing and spelling to primary and secondary age children. I help teenagers prepare for GCSEs on a gradual basis from year 8, focusing on revision techniques, targeting exam questions and a particular emphasis on the skills needed to pass the English language exam.

Teaching Experience

I am an experienced teacher, educational specialist, study skills tutor and dyslexia assessor with over 30 years’ experience working across secondary, further and higher education, as well as international education. I have extensive experience teaching GCSE and A Level Psychology, supporting students of a wide range of abilities and backgrounds, and have been an AQA Psychology examiner since 2004, giving me a detailed understanding of examination requirements and assessment. Alongside Psychology, I have taught English, ESOL, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), literacy and study skills to children, young people and adults, both in the UK and internationally. My experience includes teaching international students preparing for university study, delivering pre-sessional and foundation programmes, and preparing learners for Cambridge and other English language examinations. Since 2014, I have worked independently as an educational consultant, providing one-to-one literacy, academic and study skills support to students aged 6–16, alongside specialist dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) assessment. I have also provided specialist one-to-one study skills support to university students through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), developing personalised strategies for reading, academic writing, organisation, revision and time management.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach is designed specifically for students with SEN. I combine a multisensory approach with student-led learning, creating lessons that are engaging, challenging and enjoyable all of which help build confidence and resilience. Rather than expecting students to fit a traditional learning model, I adapt my teaching to suit each child's strengths, interests and preferred ways of learning. My lessons are 55 minutes in duration with follow-up work provided to take home in order to practise the skills outlined during the lesson.

Becky has been an excellent tutor for my son who is doing A level psychology. She has given him a deeper understanding of the psychology topics he didn't understand and really helped prepare him for the exams. She has helped him learn how to develop and plan his essays to pick up extra marks and his confidence in exams has grown considerably. We saw an increase in grades between mocks because of Becky's help. My son is also dyslexic and Becky has been brilliant at helping him with this in mind. He said that she always reads the questions to him which they are working on which ensures he understands them. Would really recommend Becky.

Tutor response

Thank you for feedback Carolyn, it was a pleasure to work with your son.

Becky is extremely professional and approachable. My daughter has eased into her sessions and enjoying studying with Becky. My daughter has always found academia extremely challenging and non motivational, so this is reassuring as a parent and we have seen leaps in her confidence. Becky is informative and has clear plans on progression whilst being flexible to each student's specific needs.
