Tutor Profile

Aaliyah

Online tutor

I’m a UCL graduate with five years experience teaching English. I am DBS checked, SEND trained with experience teaching all the exam boards. I began tutoring at university as a way to earn income whilst studying. Over those few years I had students that were working at grades 3/4 in their year 11 mocks achieve 8s in their final exams. I also had that initially hated English then decide to take it as an A level since sessions had made the subject more enjoyable. These experiences made me realise how impactful and beneficial tutoring can be so I decided to pursue it post graduating.

I have left some reviews from my most recent cohort of parents and students for your reference if you wish to see.

• “Aaliyah: who has been amazing. Student’s name was initially worried about transitioning to a new tutor, but Aaliyah made her feel understood and supported from day one.” — Parent review • “Aaliyah was great with my helping daughter for English GCSE. Really knew the subject and helped her get pass she needed. Very kind soul and managed to connect with her. Best thing we did to help.” — Parent review • “Aaliyah has been fantastic with my daughter. They both connected really well and Aaliyah was a great teacher of the subject. She helped with confidence, subject knowledge and process. Great find, thank you. She will miss her time with you !!” — Parent review • “Thank you so much Aaliyah, I’ve loved having you as a tutor and you’ve helped me so much with my English…I hope more students are able to have your amazing support and positivity.” — Student review

Teaching Experience

I have been teaching for the past five years now both online and in person. I have tutored students across secondary school learning with a variety of priorities and learning abilities including students requiring SEND support. My expertise specialise towards 1-1 sessions with students in order to provide an in depth student curated approach to teaching.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring varies based on the student. Each student has varying strengths and challenges with the subject and long term goals. My main priority is to get students to a point where they are achieving those goals and feel more confident in the subject. Most students who look for English tutoring feel as though subject just isn’t a subject that works for them or is incompatible with how their brain works. The big part of my job is understanding their learning style and how their brain works so they can make the subject and the way they learn about it works for them.

• For KS3 student’s (year 7-9) sessions focus on building a curriculum for a student based on their interests and ensuring they receive the support and skills they require for when they enter their exam years later down the line. This is often built with the input of both parent and student in order to develop a curriculum that is best for the student.

• For KS4 student’s (year 10-11) sessions focus on ensuring students have a well developed knowledge of their exam material and skills. However many students begin tutoring at this stage without having received much guidance on how they are meant to analyse or evaluate literature. Many students at this stage may not feel confident with the subject and so building and improving these foundational skills and flexibility based on assessments or forgotten parts of the curriculum is also built in and accommodated for.

• For KS5 student’s (year 12-13) sessions are only available for those doing English Literature. Sessions revolve around ensuring student’s refine the skills they have learned in KS3-KS4 whilst developing their own unique voice and nuanced interpretations and how to articulate them. It is often students first time having to compare texts or have coursework that requires university level writing. The support they receive ensure they know how to express these ideas and understand what is being asked of them. Since these are exam students flexibility is once again built in for parts of the course student’s feel less confident in or unexpected deadlines and assessments.

For students at all levels sessions student’s are always in control of what they would rather prioritise. These sessions are for their benefit and there are check ins on what is working or not working for them.
