I am a highly experienced tutor with a Master’s degree in English with distinction from Oxford University, for which I was awarded for academic excellence. I have been working with in various educational settings for fifteen years and tutoring for ten. I genuinely love working with children and young people, getting to know them as individuals and finding out how to engage their imaginations and facilitate their progress.

Alongside my Tutoring work, I am a writer, currently in the process of finishing my first book. In this respect, I’m able to offer students insight into the craft of writing, both at the level of the sentence and with regards to the larger issues of structure and form. I often write alongside my students (particularly the younger ones) in order to model technique, offer inspiration and create and interactive workshop-style environment.

I have a great deal of experience Tutoring English at all levels, from key stage one, through the 11+, into GCSE, A-level and at degree level. Over the years, I’ve helped students secure places at both independent and grammar schools, including Highgate, NLCS, UCS, Henrietta Barnett, and South Hampstead High School. I’ve supported students to raise their attainment significantly at GCSE and A-level, whether they were struggling to pass the course, or hoping to achieve the highest grade.

My teaching is about far more than attainment, however. I am committed to working with students in order to develop their enjoyment of literature and language, finding ways to engage even the most reluctant readers and writers. It is my experience that all young people – all people, in fact – have some kind of talent for the written word, and I believe it is my job to find it. I have several former students who started out either indifferent to or quite phobic of English, and ended up discovering a genuine interest in the subject.

As well as helping with various exams and assessments, I also work with students who are looking for open-ended support, hoping to develop their skills without any specific focus on exams. I am very experienced at working with students with special educational needs, having worked as a SEN teaching assistant for five years (2012-17), as well as for a number of charities offering alternative educational provision. Equally, due to my expertise in my subject, I can work at a much higher level (I once offered tuition to a student throughout her Cambridge degree, for example).

My lessons take many forms, according to the needs of each student. I always carry out an initial assessment before making any recommendations, as well as ongoing assessments as the teaching goes on, adapting and tailoring my provision in response to students’ changing needs. I love working together with parents and carers in order to decide on next steps.
