I take a very holistic approach to teaching, as every student thinks and learns differently. I give each of my students the time and attention they deserve to build a detailed understanding of how they learn best. This is achieved through an initial introductory meeting that allows rapport to be built and an assessment of a student's unique learning style to be conducted, letting me note their goals and preferences and build a personalised picture before lessons begin.
In lessons, I draw on a range of methods depending on what suits the student. This may include consolidated notes, diagrams, whiteboard work, and mark-scheme-specific practice questions. I am attentive to the areas my students find difficult and break them down into their simplest components to aid understanding. My background in medicine allows me to provide interesting real-world examples to help students find meaning in what they are learning, often increasing engagement.
I set weekly homework focused on building revision materials, ensuring only revision is taking place during exam season rather than learning new content. I am mindful of how pressure can affect a student's mental wellbeing and regularly check in with them to ensure they are coping well. I help build structured revision plans that work well with pre-existing schedules and stay in consistent contact with parents, so everyone involved has visibility on progress and next steps.
