Teaching Experience

I am Head of Psychology at a leading independent school and have over eleven years’ experience teaching and tutoring GCSE, A Level, Undergraduate and Masters-level students of Psychology. Psychology is a research discipline that I am deeply passionate about, and still very much captivated by. My love of Psychology and, more generally, the learning process, has meant that alongside my full-time teaching role, I completed a PhD in Evolutionary & Social Psychology at Durham University. I also am the co-lead for teaching and learning within my school setting. I am a published author/ researcher in the field of experimental psychology, with my research focused on shifts in perceptions of normality following idealised image exposure. I received a First-Class Honours BSc Psychology undergraduate degree and achieved full UMS in all four papers sat as part of my own A Level Psychology study- this was the 2nd highest mark globally. I am a UCAS adviser and ‘Biopsychology for Medics’ course leader, predominantly specialising in supporting those pursuing careers in Psychology and Medicine.

Tutoring Approach

Sessions are tailored to the individual needs of the student. I have tutored a diverse range of students at various levels, with various target grades. Most of my sessions are divided into two parts: Course content consolidation (if required) and application of skill (tackling past paper questions together), with assessments set after each session. With the heavy course content, I ensure there is plenty of retrieval practice (both of current session content and other previously accessed modules). This is often in the form of a quick-fire plenary. I want my students to be successful and my hope is that those who study with me end up sharing in my love of Psychology and, more generally, my love of learning. I embrace teaching methods that involve an appropriate balance of teacher-driven support and pupil-centred activities, where students are encouraged to learn from mistakes, self-reflect and build upon their skills- ultimately preparing them not just examinations, but for life beyond school too.

Katy started teaching my daughter just before the end of Y12 exam and her grade went up immediately. Also, her feedback has been very positive, and she appreciates Katy’s thorough lessons. I hope this will help her achieve the grades she aims for. Thank you, Katy, for your commitment to the lessons and proactiveness in initiating what my daughter needs to study.

Katy is a great tutor, very structured, very thorough. I see evident progress in my daughter's performance at school (Psychology, AS level). I can confidently recommend Katy.

Katy has been fantastic for my daughter and is highly recommended. Every aspect of the tuition has been brilliant, from confidence boosting to exam preparation. I always remember asking my daughter how she finds the sessions and her comment was ' I learn more in that hour than I do in a week at school', high praise indeed.

Katy is an excellent tutor. She is extremely organised but also empathetic and supportive. My 18-year-old daughter is recovering from a major illness and has hardly been at school for the last two years. She had a panic attack in her one mock exam in February and has been feeling overwhelmed by the amount of content she has to cover. Katy has boosted her confidence and believes she can do it. Katy's experience as an AQA examiner is also a huge asset. I would thoroughly recommend her.
