I am an English Teacher (former Head of Department) with over 25 years experience. I have an MA in English from the University of Newcastle.
I teach online and have taught hundreds of students over the last 8 years, from Year 7 - Year 13. I currently teach KS3 English as well as IGCSE and GCSE English Language and Litertature.
I have been recognised as an 'outstanding' teacher by OFSTED and have had a wide experience of working in a range of different schools. I have been a examiner at GCSE English and currently teach all of the exam boards at GCSE and IGCSE English.
I see tutoring as a chance to build upon the cornerstones of learning in order for students to achieve their target goals. I believe 1:1 sessions should be fun and enjoyable. I shall assess the student and then with that student set out our joint aims and targets for the period of study. Mini targets will be set in order for myself, students and parents to see the progress achieved over a period of time. Homework is set every week.
I give regular feedback to parents and keep them informed of all progress made.
When my daughter Marcella was in Year 10, she really struggled with her GCSE English. She often complained about her teachers and felt she hated the subject. It was tough to watch her lose confidence. Then we found Anthony. Within just a few lessons, everything changed. It turned out Marcella was more than capable, she had just never been properly taught some of the key techniques (perhaps the class size is too large?). Anthony broke things down clearly, showed her the easy wins for GCSE exams, and made English feel manageable. The impact was just transformative. Marcella’s confidence grew, not just in English but across all her subjects. Her grades improved, and by December she decided to tackle the gaps in her maths too — a subject she had always feared. Once again, within weeks, her performance soared. Working with Anthony showed her that with the right help and effort, she could succeed even in the areas she once found intimidating. A year ago, she insisted she was only suited for humanities. Now, thanks to that renewed confidence, she has chosen double maths and double science for her A-levels, a transformation none of us could have imagined. We are truly grateful to Anthony for helping to unlock her potential and set her on this new, ambitious path. Thank you, Anthony!
Anthony struck an immediate rapport with my son and has been able to swiftly tap into and unlock his capabilities. Having weekly sessions with Anthony has made a huge difference, with significant improvement on grade achievements. The sessions are super useful, informative and confidence building - my son actively engages and looks forward to the sessions (can’t be said for all subjects!). Anthony's been a very methodical and supportive presence for my daughter, supporting her while she gains confidence in English over the past two years. She has gone from panicked disengagement to increasing confidence in English, which has been wonderful to witness. Her grades have definitely improved!
My son enjoys his classes with Anthony and feels that they are very useful. He has been home bound due to surgery and thanks to Anthony’s wonderful teaching, my son feels that he has been able to keep up with what his mates are doing in class. He also enjoys his way of teaching and personality. All round a five star from us!
