I am a private English tutor based in Pinner, NW London with my wife and two children. I am passionate about reading, both classic and modern literature, and my favourite authors are P.G.Wodehouse and Saki. I also enjoy artistic and creative pursuits, particularly clay sculpting.

I have been teaching English for 30 years. I spent 15 years teaching overseas: one year in France and 14 years in Japan. This experience gave me a thorough understanding of English grammar and structure and how to explain it. I spent four years preparing Japanese high school graduates to enter colleges and universities in the US. This work involved teaching essay organisation and relates directly to the guidance I give students for GCSE English.

Since returning to the UK, I have taught GCSE English Language and Literature which I find rewarding because it enables me to discuss literature and develop my students' understanding of it. I am a published author, having written a book based on my experience and knowledge titled "10 Ways to Improve Your Grades in GCSE English".

My tutoring approach is grounded in the beliefs that students should be able to think for themselves, and that they learn best when they are interested in a subject.
I support them in this by eliciting their ideas and opinions, which both engages them and builds their confidence. The next step is to show them how to express their ideas as clearly and effectively as possible. I firmly believe in the benefits of reading and always encourage my students to read outside of lessons, recommending books if necessary. Lastly, I believe that what students need most is practice. I always set optional homework at the end of every lesson, and I ask students to submit this to me at least 24 hours before the next lesson. This allows me to mark and return it - in my own time and at no extra charge - which helps maximise efficient use of lesson time.
