Tutor Profile

My name is Paul, and I am an experienced History and Politics tutor, academic and published writer with more than 10 years of tutoring success.

I completed my PhD in Modern History and Politics in 2017. I have since published two books, numerous peer-reviewed and currently have 169 academic citations. My first book, English Uprising, was selected as Book of the Day by The Guardian, while my second reflected seven years of archival research into British political history. My work has been featured across BBC, ITV and Sky News. I have even been interviewed by Piers Morgan!

I bring genuine academic expertise into my tutoring, helping students not only improve grades, but also develop intellectual confidence, analytical precision and a deeper understanding of the subjects they study. Please see a snapshot of the 2026 results of my A Level students at the bottom of this page.

Teaching Experience

I have taught across the independent school, university and private tutoring sectors. I have been History Subject Lead at Chelsea Independent College and taught at Notting Hill and Ealing High School, as well as lecturing in History and Politics at Teesside University and University of Richmond.

Over the past decade, I have tutored more than 50 students across GCSE, iGCSE and A Level, covering OCR, AQA and Edexcel. For history, I have taught Britain from 1066 to Blair, Germany, Russia and the Soviet Union, the Cold War, America, Europe and the History of Medicine. I have taught UK Politics, UK Government, Political Ideologies, Politics of the USA and Global Politics.

Many students have made dramatic improvements in grades, essay writing, source analysis and exam confidence through highly focused and individualised support.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring combines academic expertise with a highly structured and interactive teaching method. I work particularly well with ambitious students aiming for top grades and competitive university entry, but I am equally effective at supporting students who need help building confidence, structure and exam technique.

I specialise in online tutoring and use collaborative Google Docs, live essay construction and real-time feedback to make sessions engaging, demanding and highly productive. Rather than passive discussion, students actively develop arguments and writing skills throughout each lesson. This allows me to identify weaknesses immediately, model top-level analytical writing step-by-step and steadily build independence and confidence.

My sessions are energetic, discussion-driven and carefully tailored to each student’s strengths, goals and learning style.

We cannot recommend Paul highly enough. He started tutoring my son just one month before his A-level History exams, and in that very short period they managed to cover all subjects and his support made an enormous difference. Paul was extremely knowledgeable, focused and effective. He quickly identified exactly where my son needed help and worked intensively with him on both subject knowledge and exam technique. Despite the limited time, he helped him organise a huge amount of material, strengthen his essay structure and made him go into the exams feeling much more confident. My son got A* in History exams and we wholeheartedly recommend Paul to any A level history student

Tutor response

Thank you for such lovely feedback and congratulations on such a brilliant grade!

I really struggled with the OCR Russia and Its Rulers paper due to poor teaching and teacher absences at school, achieving a D in the paper before working with Paul. He was incredibly supportive and encouraging, and particularly helpful in breaking down the difficult content I had previously struggled to understand. With Paul’s help, I improved from a D to an A* in the final exam, achieving an A* overall in History. I would highly recommend Paul to anyone who is struggling with A-level History.

Paul has been tutoring my son in A level politics and he has now a predicted grade of A*. We are going to continue and he is also starting to tutor him in History as well. He has a wealth of knowledge, is polite, punctual and encouraging. My son thinks he's great as well. Couldn't be happier!

Tutor response

That is great to hear - looking forward to working together even more this year!

Paul has helped me through my A levels in both history and politics immensely over the span of 18 months and is a crucial reason that I am about to start a politics and international relations degree at the university of Exeter. He helped me gain confidence in history which I never saw possible and gave me chance to actually debate and understand information, especially politics which I never felt able to do in the classroom environment. His atmosphere was nothing but positive and he even marked my extra essays when my teachers at school were taking weeks to, giving me constructive feedback that wasn't just generic marking. He was equally helpful in understanding course content, dedicating a lot of time to explain nationalism and socialism to me even if what I didn't understand was the easier aspects of the course. I never felt awkward to say that I just didn't understand something. Furthermore, the practice paragraphs we did enabled me to improve my essays far more than anything my teachers even attempted to do. I could not recommend Paul as a tutor enough.

Very kind feedback - thank you. You were so engaged in our sessions and supplemented that with a lot of additional work, so your excellent grades were well deserved. Best of luck at uni!
