Lucia

Private Biology and Chemistry Tutor in Bishop's Stortford

Hi, I’m Lucia! I recently finished my A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology, achieving A*AA, and I’m currently on a gap year before hopefully studying Dentistry next year. I also work as a Science Technician in a secondary school, so I’m still surrounded by science and education every day.

Because I’ve only recently been through GCSEs and A-levels myself, I know how stressful they can be and how much of a difference it makes when something is explained in a way that actually clicks. Working in a school has also given me a really good understanding of the classroom environment and the challenges students can face.

I’m really friendly and patient, and I want my lessons to be somewhere students feel completely comfortable asking questions, even if they think they’re silly ones! I can help with anything from going back over topics they don’t understand, to revision, exam questions and improving exam technique.

Most importantly, I want students to come away from each lesson feeling more confident in themselves and feeling like the subject is a little less daunting than it was before.

Teaching Experience

I volunteered as a reading mentor for over a year, working one-to-one with younger students and helping them build both their ability and confidence. It taught me that every student learns differently, so I became used to changing how I explained things until I found a way that worked for them. I’m patient and encouraging, and I always want students to feel comfortable telling me when they don’t understand something.

Tutoring Approach

I think the best tutoring comes from getting to know the student and understanding how they learn best. I like to find out which areas they’re struggling with and then work through them at their own pace, explaining things in different ways until they genuinely understand rather than just memorising them.

Once the understanding is there, I focus a lot on practice questions and exam technique, as knowing the content is only half of it – students also need to know how to turn that knowledge into marks.

I want my sessions to be positive and relaxed, where students feel completely comfortable asking questions and getting things wrong. My aim is not only to improve their grades, but to help them become more confident and independent in their own learning.
