Tutor Profile

Katharine

French and Chemistry GCSE tutor based in West Yorkshire

I'm Katie, a French and Linguistics MA (Hons) graduate of the University of Edinburgh based in West Yorkshire. As part of my degree I spent a year studying at the University of Strasbourg, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Long story short, I've spent a lot of time learning French in an academic setting, with all its challenges and triumphs! In addition to French, I studied English literature, chemistry, and maths at A-level, achieving three A*s and an A respectively.

In my spare time I love to bake, play hockey, and draw, particularly sketches of places I have travelled to.

Teaching Experience

I have a younger sister who is currently studying for her GCSEs who I tutor on an informal basis, primarily focusing on French, chemistry, and maths. Furthermore, I have two years experience tutoring GCSE AQA chemistry in weekly 2-1 sessions. We focussed on sharpening their exam skills, reviewing tricky topics, and practicing calculations.

Tutoring Approach

One of the key benefits of tutoring is the possibility to tailor the sessions to the student and this is something I embrace. Furthermore, the 1-1 format of tutoring allows for more active engagement between the student and tutor. As such I aim to make my sessions a safe space where students can engage and ask questions as much as possible, something that isn't always easy in a larger classroom format.

My sessions aim first to hone in on the skills that a student most needs to develop before creating a flexible plan to achieve their goals. In French, for example, this could be through the revision and practice of cornerstone skills in grammar, or by improving their confidence through conversation in French. Everyone is different! I equally embrace the possibility for students to choose themselves what they want to work on, and what methods work best for them, to ensure we make the most of the time we have.

Just as I am flexible in my teaching content and style, I am equally happy to teach whatever length sessions suit the student, 45mins to 1h30mins being typical.
