Tutor Profile

I am a fully qualified English teacher and full-time private tutor, specialising in GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature, A-level English Literature and A-level English Language. I also teach KS2 and 3 together with entrance examination skills for 11+ and 13+ candidates.

I am also an AQA Examiner.

Before moving into teaching, I spent fifteen years working as a criminal defence Barrister, a background which gave me a strong grounding in close reading, precise argument, persuasive writing and the careful use of evidence. Those skills transfer very naturally into English tutoring, particularly when students need to move beyond vague or general responses and develop sharper, more analytical written work.

Teaching Experience

I began teaching English in 2012, first in a state school in West London where I acquired my QTS and then at an independent girls’ school in Buckinghamshire, where I spent the final six years of my classroom teaching career. I now dedicate all of my time to private tutoring. I teach GCSE English Language and Literature, as well as A-level English Literature and English Language, and I have worked with students across a wide range of abilities, from those needing confidence and structure to those aiming for the highest grades. I have also worked as an AQA examiner for ten years, which gives me a very clear understanding of how exam answers are assessed and what students need to do to move securely through the mark bands. Although exam boards differ in wording and format, the underlying assessment skills are often closely related: clear argument, precise evidence, close analysis, contextual awareness where relevant, and confident control of written expression.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring is carefully tailored to the individual student. Some students need help with confidence, planning and basic structure; others need more advanced support with close analysis, essay style, unseen texts, exam timing or moving from good answers into the top bands. I work in a clear, practical and focused way, breaking tasks down without lowering expectations. I have considerable experience supporting students with learning differences, processing difficulties and uneven confidence in English, and I try to make the subject feel manageable rather than mysterious. My lessons are supportive but honest: students are shown exactly what they are doing well, where marks are being lost, and how to improve their responses in a way they can actually reproduce independently.

My daughter really enjoyed her GCSE English lessons with Jason and found them both engaging and helpful. Jason was patient, knowledgeable, and explained concepts clearly, which helped build her confidence in the subject. He was also fun and witty, quickly establishing an excellent rapport with my daughter, which made the lessons enjoyable. The lessons were well structured and tailored to her needs, with regular feedback that supported her progress. Jason was always happy to be contacted outside of tutorials to answer questions and provide additional support when needed, which was greatly appreciated. Thanks to his guidance and encouragement, my daughter achieved outstanding results, earning grades 8 and 9. I would highly recommend Jason to anyone looking for GCSE English support.

My daughter said he explains material very clearly as well as share useful resources and encourages actual interest and exploration into the subject. She was able to raise her score from a predicted 7 to a 9 after working with him.

Jason was my son’s IGCSE English tutor for about six months and honestly one of the best we’ve had. He reignited his interest in the subject, which had been dormant for years. He was great at listening and understanding his confidence gaps and helped him immensely. As a parent, I appreciated his availability to answer questions and provide valuable feedback. He never wasted our time or lessons and was considerate if we needed to cancel or change plans. Every lesson was conducted professionally with humour and a genuine passion for teaching and helping.

Tutor response

Thank you so much, Aza, it was a delight working with your son. He is a genuinely talented young man, with a real passion for literature and all the ideas and emotions that it engenders.

Jason is an outstanding teacher who truly puts the welfare of his students at the heart of everything he does. He has been preparing my son for his upcoming 13+ scholarship exams, and the progress has been remarkable. Jason has a rare ability to explain complex concepts—whether it’s analyzing challenging poems or tackling advanced comprehension texts—in a way that is both clear and engaging. What stands out most is the time and care he invests beyond the sessions. He provides detailed feedback and practical strategies for improvement, ensuring my son continues to grow even outside of lesson hours. This level of dedication shows that Jason’s priority is always the success and confidence of his students, not financial gain. Thanks to his guidance, my son has made significant improvements and is now firmly on track for his scholarship exams at a leading independent school. Jason’s expertise, encouragement, and genuine care have made a huge difference, and we are deeply grateful for his support.
