Tutor Profile

Madeleine

Private Study Skills and Geography Tutor in Sevenoaks

I am a Geographer first and foremost. My professional career began in Human Resources, where I specialised in Learning and Development and particularly in one-to-one situations working as a tutor, mentor and coach. In parallel I have a Master's degree in Learning and Development to ensure an academic foundation to my work. I am now also an Art Historian and applying my tutoring experience to my new field.

Teaching Experience

I originally came to tutoring through my professional experience and Masters degree rather than through a teaching route. I have 7 years tutoring experience and whilst specialising in A level, with experience of the Edexcel, OCR, AQA and Cambridge International syllabuses (and happy to learn others), I also tutor GCSE level.

Tutoring Approach

Our sessions will be focused on your needs and be conversational, helping you to develop your own thinking and ideas on the topics, rather than a one-way 'telling' approach. In this way, you will begin to 'think like a geographer' - the key ingredient needed for exam success. With essay practice in parallel, you will also learn to write like a geographer, using geographical terms with increasing fluidity and succinctness. History of Art thinking and writing will be developed in the same way. My own motivation and enthusiasm stems from a love of my subjects, which I hope to pass on to you. I believe in person sessions are more powerful, where there is the opportunity to develop a greater sense of rapport with my students. I do however offer online sessions where this is not feasible.

Madeleine was great with our 6th former. Very thorough and accommodating with timings when they finished for study leave. We were predicted a D and Madeleine managed to get them an A on the day as they were so well prepared!

louisa

Madeleine has been an excellent tutor, supporting Louisa through her Geography A level. Knowledgeable and patient. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her.

unfortunately we were unable to proceed with the lesson as the tutor was unable to use her camera

Tutor response

There was an unfortunate misunderstanding over whether the tuition would take place in person or online, probably due to the fact it was organised quickly. Since Covid I have only had requests for in person tutoring- which I believe is more effective- whilst the student was only used to working online with tutors. Unfortunately I was having intermittent problems with my camera at the time so was unable to offer an online session; we nonetheless proceeded to have a half hour session over Face Time, which worked very adequately and I believe we had an effective session together.

Madeleine did a three day Geography revision course for two A level students over the Easter break - she prepared thoroughly and did an excellent job. Many thanks!

Tutor response

Thank you very much for your kind comments Nicholas. I enjoyed working closely with the two students and with yourself, and would be happy to do so again.

Madeleine has been fantastic at building my son's confidence. We are only at the beginning of Year 13 but her expert guidance and support so far has been invaluable. She is calm and engaging.
