I went into teaching because I love literature and I love working with young people; as a result I find it not only satisfying but also thoroughly enjoyable. I have worked in independent schools since 2005 and have taught both English Literature and Drama and Theatre Studies to A level standard as well as giving private tuition and running a boarding house.

I am qualified to MA level and have a Boarding Schools Association certificate in pastoral care.

A recent homeschooled tutee's parent left me this testimonial:

'We cannot express our gratitude enough for your support of our son throughout the last two years. Your clear understanding of his learning challenges and your ability to tailor your teaching to suit his ways of working allowed our son to grow in confidence and begin to explore his creative side leading to an increased ability to express himself in writing. Indeed, not only did he begin to read more but he also began to write more. Your encouragement of his writing and forensic approach to the reading disciplines of the exam paper meant that when it came to taking the exam, he was absolutely clear on how he approached the questions. Clearly his result of a grade 9 exceeded even our expectations and is testament to your dedication, professionalism and ability in preparing candidates for public exams whatever their learning needs are.'

I am also a published poet, and have won a Northern Writers' Award for poetry as well as the Poetry Society's Stanza Competition.

Teaching Experience

I am a highly qualified and experienced teacher.

GCSE/iGCSE/IB: I have taught iGCSE English Language and English Literature (CIE, Edexcel A and B, AQA), GCSE English (OCR, WJEC and AQA), GCSE English Language (OCR and AQA) and GCSE English Literature (OCR, WJEC and AQA) as well as examining for OCR, AQA and CIE. (I can teach to any syllabus, however.) I have also taught IB SL and HL English Language and Literature.

A level: I have taught English Literature (OCR, Edexcel, AQA A and AQA B) and the Literature aspect of English Language and Literature (Edexcel). I have also taught Drama and Theatre Studies (AQA).

University entrance exams: ACT and SAT.

I examine for two boards, and am a senior examiner for one. I have given private tuition to students of all ages including mature students requiring help at all educational levels. I have also tutored English Literature undergraduates and PGCE students (Primary and Secondary) and provided help for students needing to learn the skills and exam techniques required for the Literacy Key Skills Test. I am one of the only tutors in the UK providing expert English tuition for the ACT and SAT American university entrance exams. My students come from state schools across the country, some of the country's best public schools such as Eton, Westminster, Sevenoaks and many others, and from boarding and international schools all across the world.

I believe that study and revision skills are incredibly important and always teach them alongside academic subjects.

As a Housemistress I have several years of experience of pastoral care and am empathetic and sensitive to my students as individuals.

Tutoring Approach

I am a strong believer in working with my students' strengths while challenging them to improve areas of weakness in a supportive and friendly manner. As well as the syllabus required I also teach the study skills students need to continue their learning between lessons.

I believe that learning should be fun and that everyone has the capacity to enjoy language, novels, poetry and plays. I aim to help all students set themselves ambitious but realistic goals, whether that is to read aloud confidently, pass GCSE English or get an A* in A level English Literature, and then to meet those goals and go on to face new challenges with positivity and determination. Recent pupil success stories include one who was predicted a G at GCSE but achieved a C grade after only half a term's tuition with me, and several who have achieved A* grades at A level.

As well as offering tuition sessions of one, two or three hours on a regular basis, I offer intensive day and two day long courses to pupils preparing for exams. These are during half terms and school holidays and are one on one. Please enquire for further details.

Always on time for each lesson and was well prepared. My daughter found the lessons interesting and worthwhile. She had a much better understanding of how to write and her grades should now reflect her ability.

We've found Liz to be a fantastic tutor and would be very happy to contact her again if our children needed further English tuition.

Our daughter is in Year 11; she has had 3 sessions of GCSE English tuition with Liz. She is definitely starting to believe in herself and has gained confidence in her own abilities. We’re sure with Liz’s valuable support, our daughter’s confidence will continue to grow and hopefully enable her to improve her final grade at GCSE level in both English lLiterature and English Language.

My daughter suffers with severe anxiety & we opted to go down the home schooling route. Liz has tutored her for a couple of weeks now, & has proved to be reliable, & immediately put her at ease. Lessons are really productive & it’s lovely to see my daughter gaining confidence so rapidly. I would not hesitate in recommending Liz as a tutor.

Liz is an absolutely outstanding tutor - from day one she made my daughter, who has been studying her A-Levels from home, feel extremely comfortable, not only providing superb quality teaching but also much encouragement and support which has helped my daughter to gain confidence. Liz is passionate, dedicated and incredibly organised, all of which makes her an absolutely fantastic tutor who I can not praise highly enough! Thank you so much for all your help! Helen

Tutor response

Liz was an excellent tutor for my son and she steered him through to pass his English GCSE, when he had already failed it twice. He really liked the Skype sessions, it forced him to focus on what he was doing as Liz was working along with him and advising him as he was doing the work. There was no hiding place! He never once complained about having to do the session and this was really down to Liz's personality and her "can do" attitude. I would have no hesitation in recommending Liz .

Tutor response

Thanks so much for your kind words-I was very proud of him!

Elizabeth was an excellent tutor for my son doing his GCSE English Literature in Y10 and helped him to achieve his challenge target of a Level 7 (A) in the new exams. Elizabeth has a great manner with her students, is very knowledgable, always on time, well prepared and very easy to communicate with. Due to time/ travel constraints the lessons were done via Skype which worked perfectly.

Tutor response

Thanks Deborah, it was a pleasure to teach B, and his result was thoroughly well deserved!

We found Elizabeth to be an excellent tutor. She taught my daughter A level English Literature helping and supporting her at a time when her confidence was at an all time low and time was running out before her exam. She was extremely knowledgeable about the texts and I am certain that her fantastic exam result which was 2 grades higher than predicted, was down to Elizabeth's fantastic teaching.

Tutor response

It was such a please to teach K and I was so pleased with her result-well done her!

I am delighted with the progress that my son made with Liz. He had one lesson a week from January to April 2016 in order to help him with his GCSE English. He was achieving D grades in most of his controlled assessments and his mock exam result was a D. He wasn't keen when I suggested a tutor but thanks to Liz it wasn't a chore for him and I never had problems getting him there! She is enthusiastic, friendly and she definitely gave him more confidence in his abilities both in Language and Literature. She made him feel at ease and she carefully planned work for him enabling him to progress a whole grade in both Language and Literature. She even managed to make him laugh and smile, something that he never imagined he would do whilst doing English! He was so pleased when he opened his GCSE results to see that he had a C in both of his English exams! I am so thrilled with how Liz has helped my son that I have already recommended her to two of my friends, who will be needing GCSE tuition for their sons in the future! Emma, York

There is not enough words of how much Elizabeh helped me! I am Russian and i would never think that i could ever pass my gcse english for 'B'. This grade was deciding if i will get to the University or not. I was absolutely hopeless and about to give up, but just a few lessons with Elizabeth gave me such a great confidence and knowledge of what i have to do when i will be at the exam. Elizabeth is an excellent tutor. As an experienced teacher, she knows what examination boards require for the pupil to achieve high grades. She is personable and takes time to really tailor the study to the individual. My son actually likes his tutor time, which is quite something after long school days.
