Hi, I’m Dr Xin, a Manchester-based Maths and Science tutor with seven years of teaching experience. I support GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and university students, both online and in person. I hold a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Manchester.

I teach Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, as well as university-level mathematics and engineering topics including calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics, mechanics and mathematical modelling.

Students come to me for different reasons. Some have specific gaps that are beginning to affect their confidence. Some understand the content but struggle to apply it in exam questions. Others are aiming for grades 8–9 or A–A* and need more challenging, carefully selected practice.

My lessons are calm, structured and adapted to the individual student. I identify exactly where understanding begins to break down, explain the topic clearly and step by step, and then help the student apply it independently. Exam technique is developed alongside subject knowledge rather than left until the final few weeks.

For regular students, I also provide personalised lesson notes, targeted homework and feedback between lessons where appropriate. This gives students a clear record of what they have learnt and helps parents see how their understanding is developing over time.

I have seven years of experience teaching students across a wide range of ages, abilities and academic goals. My teaching includes:

I have worked with students who needed to rebuild their foundations, students preparing for important examinations, and higher-attaining students aiming for the top grades. I am comfortable adapting lessons for students who need a slower and more reassuring explanation, as well as those who need greater depth and challenge.

My academic background allows me to explain not only how a method works, but also the reasoning behind it. At the same time, I keep explanations practical and closely connected to the student’s syllabus and examination requirements.

Lessons are available online, at my office in Manchester, or at the student’s home within my travel area.

My teaching is built around one principle: before a student can improve, we need to identify precisely what is holding them back.

At the beginning, I look at the student’s recent schoolwork, assessments and current topics. I then identify the highest-priority gaps and create a clear plan that supports their school course while strengthening any missing foundations.

During a typical lesson, I first check the student’s existing understanding. I explain the new idea in manageable steps, work through an example with them, and then gradually reduce the support until they can complete questions independently. I encourage students to explain their reasoning aloud, as this often reveals misunderstandings that would otherwise be missed.

For GCSE and A-Level students, lessons also include carefully selected exam questions. We work on interpreting unfamiliar wording, choosing an efficient method, showing enough working to gain method marks, and avoiding common mistakes. As examinations approach, the focus can shift towards timed practice, past papers and mark-scheme precision.

Higher-attaining students are given more demanding, multi-step questions so that they learn to connect topics and apply familiar ideas in unfamiliar situations. Students who lack confidence receive clear structure and achievable steps without the work becoming unchallenging.

After regular lessons, I provide personalised notes and targeted practice where appropriate. Homework is selected to reinforce the exact skills covered rather than simply giving the student a large number of repetitive questions.

Above all, I aim to create a supportive environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. My goal is not only to improve grades, but also to help students become more confident and independent learners.
