Tutor Profile

William

Private Physics and Maths Tutor in Bristol

I am a tutor based in Bristol specializing in teaching Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I have a PhD in Optoelectronics as well as a masters degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southampton. Working in a world leading research group in a highly competitive field has given me a great deal of insight into not just the topics I teach but also how they are applied in the real world.

I have strong communication skills with a wide variety of audiences: I have presented my doctoral research at multiple international conferences, taught undergraduate students and conducted outreach events in primary schools. I have also been very involved with theatre both on-stage and off, including taking a 5-star show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe - the largest performance art festival in the world. I hope these examples demonstrate some of the passion I have for my work which I absolutely take into my teaching and tutoring.

The main reason I work as a tutor is that I want to help people but I am aware that the rates I advertise are unaffordable for many of the people who would benefit most from a private tutor. Therefore I do offer reduced rates to anyone who would struggle to pay the full amount; please do ask about this when you get in touch.

Teaching Experience

I have worked as a private tutor for almost 3 years in which time I have taught over 70 students in Maths, Physics, Further Maths and Electrical Engineering at GCSE, A-Level and university level. I typically work with my students in the months leading up to their final exams and most of my students have attained grades one or two levels above their predicted or mock results after working with me; this includes achieving the highest grades (8/9 or A/A*) but also raising failing students to a passing grade. I have also worked with several students over multiple years, supporting them as they learn the topics and making sure they have a strong foundation and ultimately the best chance of excelling in their exams.

Prior to working as a private tutor, I have 4 years of experience teaching undergraduate students in subjects such as Maths, Physics, Electronics and Computer Science as well as more general concepts such as problem solving, note-keeping and communication skills. Most of my time was spent with students who found the content challenging but I also helped high-achievers. My experience covers 1-on-1 teaching as well as small and large groups both online and in-person.

Tutoring Approach

I will always begin by discussing a student's individual requirements and any areas of the syllabus they would like to focus on. In my experience, however, a robust understanding of the concepts of science and engineering topics combined with problem solving skills will equip a student to answer any exam question and instill the confidence to overcome stressful exam conditions and provide the groundwork to progress further in any area they wish. My attitude is that if a student doesn't understand a concept then I need to explain it in a different way. I am patient and will always emphasize providing a student with the tools to find the answers for themselves rather than have them memorize meaningless information.

I have really enjoyed my A-level AQA Physics lessons with William. He had a very clear and effective way to explaining difficult concepts, which has made topics that I initially found challenging much easier to understand. What I particularly appreciated was the focus on exam technique and applying concepts to past-paper questions. William was always patient when I made mistakes and took the time to explain not just the correct answer, but why my approach was wrong and how to improve it. Since starting lessons, I have became much more confident in physics and felt significantly better prepared when I sat my exams. Lessons were always well organised, engaging, and tailored to what I needed help with. It was very obvious that William knew the content, and explanations were always effective and easy to understand. Additionally, William charged a very reasonable rate for his lessons, which I found to be lower than that of many other tutors on the market, while still providing an excellent standard of teaching. Lastly, I would like to highlight the significant impact that William had on my results. I routinely received Es and Ds in my school mock exams, but with William's support and guidance, I was able to achieve a B in my final exam. I would highly recommend William to anyone studying A-level Physics, particularly students who want to improve both their understanding of the subject and their exam technique.

I began working with William when I was falling behind in my STEM foundation year at university. His approachable and friendly tutoring really encouraged me to continue trying when things were not going to well for me. He broke down complex concepts into easy to understand chunks in a way that I could not get from academic support at university. This helped me to build confidence and ultimately raise my grade to a pass. I thoroughly recommend working with William. It has been incredibly helpful.

First Tutors

William has been helping my son with further maths and physics before his A levels. My son says that William knows the subjects in great depth, and been able to assist and explain clearly the most complicated topics. We are very pleased to have found William, and cannot recommend him highly enough.

First Tutors

Having time with William has helped me explore aspects of electronics I previously didn’t know of. He went far above what I was expecting by putting so much time and effort into ensuring our lesson ran smoothly, and I learnt in a way that I found beneficial. He’s clearly an extremely passionate individual towards the topics he teaches, and has a strong commitment towards guaranteeing quality education.
