Josh

Hi, my name is Josh and I am a fully qualified NHS doctor who graduated from Imperial College London. I was awarded the President's Scholarship by Imperial in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and achieved Distinctions in Medical Science and Clinical Practice. I also hold a First Class intercalated degree in Endocrinology and a Level 2 Personal Trainer Qualification which has also deepened my understanding of how the body and mind perform under pressure which is relevant to helping students prepare for high stakes exams.

The joy I get from teaching does not stop at the classroom. As a doctor, I find myself explaining and simplifying complex information every day whether that is to patients to understand their diagnosis or to medical students with difficult concepts on the ward. The same skill underpins both - meeting someone where they are and helping them take the next step.

I also think it's important to be honest that I am still learning too. Medicine is humbling in that way, there is always something new to read, a case that surprises you, or a question from a student that makes you rethink. My favourite teacher used to capture this with what he called the four Ts: teaching teaches the teacher. I've found that to be true every single time, and I try to bring that same curiosity into every session.

Whether you are preparing for A-levels, university entrance, or medical school itself, I would love to help you build not only knowledge but the system - the habits, frameworks and mindset that make the real difference.

Teaching Experience

I have over 1,500 hours of teaching experience across in-person and online settings, working with students on GCSE and A-level Biology and Chemistry as well as medical school applications.

On the medical school side, I have been involved at every stage of the process from reviewing personal statements, coaching students through MMI and panel interviews, and developing a clear understanding of what admissions teams are genuinely looking for beyond the surface level. Several students I have worked with have gone on to secure offers at top medical schools.

Beyond one-to-one tutoring, I have been involved in medical education at a wider scale. I was one of the founding Quizlet medical advisors at Imperial, creating flashcard resources that remain widely used by students today. I led the third-year lecture series for the MedEd Society at Imperial and co-authored part of the Pathology Guide, a textbook resource for fifth-year students, giving me experience of designing and delivering educational content at an institutional level.

Tutoring Approach

I focus on understanding over memorisation, and on building the transferable thinking that holds up under exam pressure.

My sessions follow a consistent structure that I've found works well. I teach through questions rather than purely lectures as I want to understand exactly where a student's thinking breaks down before trying to fix it, because patching the wrong gap is wasted effort.

The first half of each session is spent in conversation based on the specification: probing current understanding, identifying misconceptions and filling in the foundations properly.

The second half is dedicated to applying that knowledge under exam conditions, working through past paper questions together on an interactive whiteboard so students are not just absorbing information passively but learning to apply it in the way that actually earns marks.

The goal is for students to leave each session not just better informed, but thinking more clearly and independently. I want the improvements to outlast the tutoring.
