Laura

I am a highly experienced secondary school English teacher and a graduate of the University of Bristol, offering premium tuition in English across 11+ entrance preparation, Key Stages 2–5, and GCSE and A Level. I teach in an Ofsted-rated “Outstanding” school in Hertfordshire, where my practice is recognised for its academic rigour and consistently strong outcomes in English Language and Literature.

My teaching is shaped by both UK and international experience, including a professional tenure at Lycée Saint-Sernin in Toulouse, where I taught English to a range of age groups and abilities. This breadth of experience enables me to work effectively with both native and international students, developing precision in language, confidence in expression, and depth in literary analysis.

I specialise in preparing students for competitive entry to leading UK independent schools, including Brighton College, Wycombe Abbey, Westminster School, Charterhouse School, and Eton College. My work includes preparation for UKiset, ISEB Common Entrance, and advanced assessment pathways, with a focus on the high level of reading, writing, and critical thinking required for success.

Alongside this, I support UK-based students in achieving top outcomes at GCSE and A Level. My teaching develops sophisticated analytical skills, precise written expression, and confident engagement with both unseen and studied texts, ensuring students are equipped to reach the highest grade boundaries.

For younger learners, I provide carefully structured support in reading, phonics, and early writing, establishing strong foundations that underpin later academic success in English.

My approach is tailored, intellectually ambitious, and designed to ensure that each student not only meets but exceeds expectations, developing both academic excellence and lasting confidence in English.

For families requiring flexibility, I offer early morning and daytime tuition to accommodate international schedules.

Teaching Experience

I bring over 12 years’ experience teaching English within a leading UK grammar school, where I have consistently delivered exceptional academic outcomes and developed a deep understanding of the standards required for success at GCSE and A Level. Alongside this, I have over 15 years’ experience as a private tutor, working with both UK-based and international students across a wide range of abilities, including those preparing for highly selective school entry.

My students regularly achieve top grades, including Grade 9 at GCSE, as a result of a rigorous and carefully structured approach to both literary analysis and exam technique. I also have a strong track record in preparing students for competitive entrance examinations, including successful preparation for King’s Scholarship level entry at Westminster School.

One parent recently shared:

“We are thrilled to inform you that our son was successful in the Challenge exam and has been awarded a King’s Scholarship. Thank you for your guidance and support in helping him develop his English to the level required for this highly competitive process.”

I encourage prospective families to read my testimonials, which reflect consistent success at the highest level—both in securing places at leading schools and in achieving top examination grades.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach is highly specialised and results-driven, designed for students preparing for competitive English entry to leading UK independent schools, including Eton College, Wycombe Abbey, St Paul’s School, and Brighton College, as well as for UK students aiming to achieve top outcomes at GCSE and A Level.

Each programme is bespoke and diagnostically led. I begin with a rigorous assessment, carefully benchmarked against selective entrance standards such as ISEB Common Entrance (11+, 13+, 14+) and the Eton List Test, as well as GCSE and A Level assessment criteria where relevant. This allows me to identify not only gaps in knowledge, but also the level of sophistication and independence required for success at the highest level.

Tuition is then precisely tailored to develop advanced comprehension and inference, controlled and purposeful writing, and a high level of analytical depth. Students are trained to engage confidently with unseen texts, construct perceptive arguments, and write with clarity, accuracy, and stylistic control.

I also work extensively with UK-based students to secure top grades at GCSE and A Level. My teaching is aligned with all major exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and Cambridge Assessment International Education. I focus on the specific skills required to reach the highest bands, including precise textual analysis, conceptualised responses, and the ability to evaluate writers’ methods with sophistication. At A Level, this extends to developing independent critical viewpoints, confident engagement with literary criticism, and the ability to produce sustained, conceptual arguments. Students are guided through exam technique in detail, learning how to structure high-level responses under timed conditions, select and embed evidence effectively, and consistently meet the criteria for Grades 8–9 at GCSE and A–A* at A Level.

For those preparing for selective admissions, I provide structured interview coaching, including realistic mock interviews that reflect the expectations of elite schools. Students develop the ability to articulate their ideas with clarity and confidence, demonstrating intellectual curiosity and academic maturity. Detailed written feedback can be provided to families following these sessions.

My approach is defined by precision and high expectations. I work closely with families, both in the UK and internationally, to ensure that each student is not only well-prepared, but able to perform with confidence and distinction in highly competitive academic environments.
