Jen

I am an Anthropology PhD candidate at University College London, specialising in Christian religious groups. It is a pleasure to e-meet you!

While my research interests are primarily within sociology, anthropology and religion, my teaching expertise is more lateral. I tutor students from across the arts and humanities, and I specialise in academic writing skills for all ages. This background equips me to tutor students working at Undergraduate and Masters level, and to assist children and teens in subjects such as English, Religious Studies, and Modern Studies. Whether you're looking for casual tutoring, assistance with your child's literacy, or help with high school or university exam preparation, please reach out and we can make a plan.

Teaching Experience

As a Writing Skills Tutor in the UCL Anthropology Department, I have lectured on writing skills at UCL, and occasionally at other universities, for the past three years. In addition to this group tutelage, this role finds me working one-to-one with Undergraduate and Masters students seeking to improve their social science writing skills.

I also work at UCL's Academic Communication Centre, supporting students across the various departments within the School of Arts and Humanities. These tutoring sessions are focused around essay writing skills, English grammar, and logic flow and analysis. I teach students to incorporate marker feedback, apply critical thinking skills when reading and writing, and correctly respond to writing prompts and essay questions. I can help you, or your child, to understand what is being asked of them, as well as creative and elegant ways to write.

While much of my recent teaching experience has been with university students, I spent the five years prior to my doctoral fieldwork tutoring children and teenagers studying for GCSEs, National 4s and 5s, and Highers. I have continued to work with school-age learners alongside my university teaching and remain up to date with current AQA GCSE specifications and Qualifications Scotland assessment requirements.

Personally, I love conducting research - it is why I work in my field! - but I also recieve enormous fulfilment from teaching. One-to-one discussions are my favourite part of working in education; I have found that talking about material is what brings it to life, and that, subsequently, inspired writing is a personal as well as professional practice. If you flourish in a relaxed learning space with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable discussion partner, or are looking for a gentle and creative tutor for your child, then I think we would work well together.

University students have said this about my tutoring (average 4.9 star rating):

"This hour with Jen was so very helpful! As a neurodivergent student, having a friendly academic to work through my ideas with is priceless. Whereas I felt stuck and overwhelmed about the assignment before the meeting, I am now feeling positive, motivated and my vision is clarified. :)".

"Jen answered a lot of my questions in detail, and also gave me some extra tips".

"The tutor was very patient and friendly, which set the atmosphere very well. I also really liked how she explained the reasoning and logic of composing an academic paper in the arts and humanities department. She also shared many tips to writing a good paper and other things to beware of when writing a paper. She was also very mindful when sharing her view on changing things. I felt very reassured and supported in the conversation".

"Tutor gave me lots of suggestions and she read my paper very detailed, help me to organise the logic".

"Jen is so helpful and give me a lot of advice!"

Tutoring Approach

My approach strives to balance the joy of learning with the dedication to get through those essays or tasks that must be done. I prepare for each session; if you need somebody to work through set texts with, I can assure you that I will have done my reading in advance. I can tailor the amount of study you would like to do; if you want someone to work through concepts with, or if you would rather build a curated reading list with a knowledgeable teacher and you thrive on solo-study, we can work according to your needs. I will do my best to bring whatever you are studying to life through lively discussion and detailed, focused analysis of your written work - a format that I believe really suits subjects like English and the social sciences.

Additionally, I myself have needed to adapt traditional writing practices to suit my own neurodivergent needs. I recognise that some people think most clearly when writing quickly under pressure. Others thrive with short, steady daily tasks. However you best work, I can guarantee a non-judgemental, clear ear, with practical, actionable interventions.

Jen is a superb English tutor who has been able to interact with my nervous 12 year old, with consummate ease. Willow exhibit's more confidence in her English classes and attributes this to Jen's ability to explain things in understandable terms. Willow enjoys her tutoring sessions and that has made them often the highlight of her week.

Jen is a fabulous English tutor. My little sister had her teach GCSE English for nearly 6 months now and even though she is Scottish, she is quick to learn the English syllabus and be up to date with how the 1-9 grading system works which is amazing. She is very patient, communicates well, very organised, pleasant to be around, friendly and very knowledgeable in how to excel in answering questions from english reading and writing papers. She knows how to break complex topics in simple form so that my sister understands. She even asks her for homework which is fantastic! We are really impressed with how much effort Jen has put in and we can definitely see the difference. We hope this continues to next year, but aside from that I highly recommend Jen to anyone, she's a brilliant English tutor and can definitely leave a positive impact in your childs education :)

Tutor response

Thank you for your kind words Ambia! Teaching your sister is a joy: she is a kind, attentive and perceptive student (with the loveliest handwriting that I’ve seen for a long time!). She works hard and consistently, and should be really proud of the way her efforts are paying off.

Jen has been very flexible about the organisation of on-site tutoring for my daughter (18 years old). My daughter has made progress and enjoyed the lessons and conversations. I highly recommend Jen.
