As a Writing Skills Tutor in the UCL Anthropology Department, I have lectured on writing skills at UCL, and occasionally at other universities, for the past three years.
In addition to this group tutelage, this role finds me working one-to-one with Undergraduate and Masters students seeking to improve their social science writing skills.
I also work at UCL's Academic Communication Centre, supporting students across the various departments within the School of Arts and Humanities. These tutoring sessions are focused around essay writing skills, English grammar, and logic flow and analysis. I teach students to incorporate marker feedback, apply critical thinking skills when reading and writing, and correctly respond to writing prompts and essay questions. I can help you, or your child, to understand what is being asked of them, as well as creative and elegant ways to write.
While much of my recent teaching experience has been with university students, I spent the five years prior to my doctoral fieldwork tutoring children and teenagers studying for GCSEs, National 4s and 5s, and Highers. I have continued to work with school-age learners alongside my university teaching and remain up to date with current AQA GCSE specifications and Qualifications Scotland assessment requirements.
Personally, I love conducting research - it is why I work in my field! - but I also recieve enormous fulfilment from teaching. One-to-one discussions are my favourite part of working in education; I have found that talking about material is what brings it to life, and that, subsequently, inspired writing is a personal as well as professional practice. If you flourish in a relaxed learning space with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable discussion partner, or are looking for a gentle and creative tutor for your child, then I think we would work well together.
University students have said this about my tutoring (average 4.9 star rating):
"This hour with Jen was so very helpful! As a neurodivergent student, having a friendly academic to work through my ideas with is priceless. Whereas I felt stuck and overwhelmed about the assignment before the meeting, I am now feeling positive, motivated and my vision is clarified. :)".
"Jen answered a lot of my questions in detail, and also gave me some extra tips".
"The tutor was very patient and friendly, which set the atmosphere very well. I also really liked how she explained the reasoning and logic of composing an academic paper in the arts and humanities department. She also shared many tips to writing a good paper and other things to beware of when writing a paper. She was also very mindful when sharing her view on changing things. I felt very reassured and supported in the conversation".
"Tutor gave me lots of suggestions and she read my paper very detailed, help me to organise the logic".
"Jen is so helpful and give me a lot of advice!"
