Rebecca

With over 15 years of experience in education, I am a dedicated and enthusiastic tutor who is passionate about helping students achieve their full potential. I began teaching 15 years ago in a variety of secondary schools, and have always tutored alongside. Now, I work solely as a private tutor, supporting students across a wide range of ages and abilities.

I specialise in preparation for the Eleven Plus, GCSEs, and A Levels, as well as providing support for students at every stage in between. My approach is tailored to each individual learner, building confidence, strengthening skills, and fostering a genuine enjoyment of learning.

As a keen creative writer and lifelong lover of literature, I have a particular passion for English language and literature. I enjoy helping students develop their analytical skills, improve their writing, and discover the power of language and storytelling.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy playing tennis, practising yoga, and hill walking, interests that help me bring energy, balance, and a positive outlook to my work with students.

Teaching Experience

I hold a degree in English and North American Film and Literature, together with a PGCE in English and Drama from Warwick University. Throughout my career, I have taught English Language, English Literature and Drama across a wide range of ages and abilities, from primary-level learners through to A Level students. In more recent years, I have tutored for 11 plus and various entrance exams.

One of my particular strengths is building positive relationships with students who may have become disengaged from learning, especially boys who have lost confidence in their abilities or motivation. By adapting my teaching style to suit individual interests and learning preferences, I help students reconnect with learning and develop a sense of achievement.

I have extensive experience supporting students who need a confidence boost, whether they are struggling with a particular subject, preparing for examinations, or simply need encouragement to believe in their own potential. My lessons focus on creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable taking risks, asking questions and celebrating progress.

Alongside this, I enjoy working with high-achieving students who are aiming for top grades, selective school entrance examinations, scholarships, or places at highly competitive sixth forms and universities. I challenge students to think critically, write with sophistication and develop independent learning skills.

I also have significant experience working with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), tailoring lessons to suit a wide variety of learning profiles. Patience, flexibility and clear communication are at the heart of my approach, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive.

Tutoring Approach

Every student is different, and I believe the most effective tutoring begins with understanding the individual. My approach is calm, supportive and tailored to each learner's unique needs, strengths and interests.

I take time to get to know my students, finding out what motivates them, what they enjoy, and how they learn best. By connecting learning to their interests and experiences, I help make lessons engaging, relevant and enjoyable. This is particularly effective for students who may have become disengaged or lack confidence in their abilities.

I aim to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing their skills at their own pace. Building confidence is at the heart of my teaching, and I celebrate progress as well as achievement.

Whether a student is preparing for entrance exams, working towards GCSEs or A Levels, or simply looking to strengthen their skills, my goal is to help them become confident, independent learners who can achieve their full potential.

Rebecca quickly developed a good rapport with my son. He found her sessions very helpful and enjoyable. Rebecca focused on the areas where my son felt he had gaps in his knowledge. In particular he found her feedback insightful. I would definitely recommend Rebecca as an English tutor.

I had quick responses for my enquiries from Rebecca for tutoring arrangements. Tuition however did not take place as was informed by tutor the day we were due to start that she will be moving away from area.

Tutor response

Unfortunately this was due to circumstances beyond my control and as soon as I found out I let Rohey know. I offered tuition until we moved and then to do the last few sessions via online but understand this is not always suitable. I also offered to refund the fee paid to First Tutors. This was also not the day tuition was due to start as I had arranged a pre-meeting and lesson earlier in the week. However, Rohey texted me at the time I was expecting to start saying that she was late and arrived 25 minutes later. This meant we did not have time for the hour tutoring and a half hour meeting so Rohey said she’d only go ahead with the meeting and reschedule the tutoring, which I managed to do for later in the week. Obviously I understand the inconvenience but as stated, this was due to circumstances beyond my control.

my son enjoyed his first session with Rebecca although he was disappointed that it was only 5 minutes long - when i told him that it had been an hour as planned he was amazed as he had enjoyed it so much and the time had flown by!!
