Private English and English Literature Tutor in Fleet

** I specialise in teaching English Language and Literature for GCSE**

** I have an empathetic, calm, patient and intuitive approach and believe in gently encouraging and motivating all learners to achieve their potential.

** I particularly enjoy teaching those who…

• don't really love English and may have struggled with English;

•find it boring;

•just need to get over the line;

•feel lost in the classroom;

•don't know what to do to achieve those higher grades;

•feel they can't keep up at school;

•need to ensure a top grade and need to learn to structure and craft their essays to showcase their abilities;

•just need a little boost and direction to help them improve.

** I teach English Language and Literature and am familiar with the mark schemes and exam format of all the exam boards. I thoroughly know the texts and exam requirements for: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies, various poetry anthologies and many 'unseen' poems for practice.

** To accompany my lessons I have written exam question guides and notes for revision purposes.

** I accept students in Year 10 and 11.

Teaching Experience

*I have been teaching for 30 years and have been tutoring GCSE English at home in the UK and on-line for the past 10 years.

*For the past 10 years I have taught many GCSE students here who have come from state schools and private schools and have had tremendous success with passes for all. Last year I had a student who came to me having failed 3 times previously. He passed and got a grade 5!

  • Many students have come to me in September on a grade 2 and have all achieved passes in the GCSE. It is possible with the right support!!

*One to one tutoring isn't only about imparting knowledge; it's about connection and the ability to understand what approach is needed for the individual student.

*Fundamental is confidence, belief and motivation and this is what I try to build in every student.

*From my experience tutoring privately and working in schools overseas (in Japan, Singapore, Italy and Moscow) I have gained valuable expertise, sensitivity and insight in teaching all levels, backgrounds and abilities.

Tutoring Approach

*I am gentle, intuitive, and empathetic.

*I ask to be sent a piece of written work before the first lesson.

*I identify ways a student can improve from the initial lesson by having a chat, trying a reading comprehension together and by seeing a sample of their work if they have it. With this, I am then able to identify small changes to make that will help them improve and gain increased confidence.

*I start with language analysis skills as this is essential to all components of English.

*In Literature, I believe that understanding the question, and the introduction is the most important part of the essay. I provide guidance on how to write it for all possible exam questions!

*The lesson is a combination of coaching and working together on exam type questions. As well as checking understanding orally I give mini written class exercises if needed to consolidate the skills learnt.

*I always set a small amount of homework which is essential to monitor improvement. This makes all the difference!!

*I am always available to contact between lessons and am happy to mark work and give detailed feedback. This feedback is essential and significantly helps the student improve.

  • I base exam preparation on practice papers and exam question practice.

*I have myself written a vast library of resources that include notes to accompany my lessons, quotations from literature texts, and many GCSE sample and model answers.

I highly recommend Viv as an English tutor. She prepared my daughter extremely well for GCSE English Literature and Language increasing her grades from 7/8 level to achieving 9s in both subjects.

Viv has been a fantastic tutor, helping my son to improve his confidence and grades. Her sessions are well prepared and tailored to what he needs to focus on, with really clear feedback. He highly recommends her and is glad to have had her support in the run up to GCSEs.

I highly recommend Viv! Viv tutored my son for his English language and English literature GCSE exams. We selected Viv because of her knowledge of the specific texts my son was studying. Each session is based around what my son wanted to focus on and Viv taught him how to structure his answers for maximum marks. She provides revision notes and past papers to accompany each session and provides feedback on any work we sent to her. She asks questions to ensure understanding and has the ability to steer thoughts so that the student comes to the conclusion. My son went into his exams with much more confidence and we are looking forward to his results.

Tutor response

We’ve only worked with Vivienne for a short time, as we came to her following poor mock results and with GCSEs fast approaching, but the impact she’s had has been fantastic. She is an excellent English teacher who clearly loves her subject and brings that enthusiasm to every lesson. She is incredibly kind, patient, and supportive, which has really helped build my daughter’s confidence in a short space of time. She’s also very reliable and flexible, which made organising sessions around a busy and slightly stressful period so much easier. My daughter feels comfortable and encouraged, and we’ve already seen a noticeable improvement in both her confidence and attitude towards English. I only wish we had found her sooner! I would highly recommend Vivienne to anyone looking for a dedicated and inspiring tutor.

Viv is the most amazing tutor. English was not my daughter’s favourite subject, but she now enjoys poetry, has much more confidence with English all round, and enjoys her sessions with Viv very much. Each face-to-face lesson is a quiet hour away from everything else going on, where Viv listens, gives feedback on my daughter’s work, and offers amazing tips on how to improve. Viv has also sent pieces of work and advice — and wished my daughter luck — outside of lesson time. Viv’s encouragement and support have been top-notch. We will miss you, Viv, but hope to see you again when it’s my son’s turn for a GCSE confidence boost! 😊

Tutor response

That's most generous of you to say - it was my pleasure to help a wonderful student with such desire to improve; so eager to learn and such a pleasure to support. All the very best!
