Teaching Experience

I taught Chemistry at a large Leicestershire 14-18 School for over 30 years. I was Head of Chemistry at this school for 20 years. I am now a full time Chemistry tutor and examiner. I teach and tutor all exam boards including AQA, EDEXCEL, OCR and OCR(Salters) A-Level Chemistry and AQA and OCR GCSE Chemistry and EDEXCEL IGCSE Chemistry. I have tutored students outside of school for over 35 years with much success. Many of my A-level students have achieved 100% in A-level Chemistry modules and I have tutored many GCSE students who have achieved 100% in all their GCSE modules for GCSE Chemistry. I am also a Principal Examiner for IGCSE Chemistry. I have marked both Foundation and Higher IGCSE Chemistry papers. I have been an Examiner for Singapore A-level Chemistry. Both these roles have helped me to recognise the difficulties that students have with both GCSE and A-level examination questions and the way to answer them successfully. I use this knowledge to the students advantage in my lessons. As well as being an examiner I set papers and multiple choice questions. I tutor online using Zoom which works really well. I have had many students who have gone on to study medicine and other medical degrees.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is variable depending on the ability of the student and what they are struggling on at the time. However I believe that the practicing of past paper questions is vital for examination success. It is the attention to detail which counts in an examination and I make sure all of my students know everything in the syllabus and have practiced lots of different styles of examination question. I tutor online using Zoom usually texting, emailing or messaging students examination practice questions which works really well. At the moment all my tutoring is online. As well as tutoring many students in the UK at the moment I tutor students in Dubai, India, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.

We concentrated on making sure that all parts of the syllabus were covered and understood. We looked at all the practicals making sure that the methods were understood and revised. We have been concentrating on the more challenging parts of the A-level syllabus making sure that all the detail is covered and understood and then supplementing the theory with harder past exam questions. I have also been giving advice on how some of these questions should be structured in the exam.
