Daniel

Private Maths and Further Maths Tutor in Cambridge

Deepening mathematical understanding: from building foundational basics to guiding exceptional talent to truly flourish.

I am a highly motivated and capable mathematics graduate of the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick working full-time as a maths tutor, teaching mostly A/AS Level, STEP and MAT.

Generally I’m flexible and time can be found on most days as this job is my sole focus. Let me know what times are good for you and I can see what fits in.

Teaching Experience

I have over 8000 hours, having been teaching full-time since 2014, so I'm experienced tutoring in this area (and related, e.g. STEP papers, international baccalaureate, entrance exams, MAT, GMAT, maths challenge, adult learning, university lecture courses).

Tutoring Approach

I get along well with students using a friendly enthusiastic manner and patient guidance, allowing me to engage them in a subject that many (sadly) find difficult or tedious to deal with. I’ve had significant success helping students to see why this subject is exciting and beautiful as well as extremely useful. Passing a maths exam can be stressful and overwhelming at times. With my help a student can learn not just all the material they need, but also efficient, reliable and (most importantly) intuitive approaches to thinking about the topics/problems. Students often cite both my enthusiasm and clarity as having really benefited them. I really genuinely enjoy sharing the passion I have for maths with others, I have the best job in the world!

Additionally, if a student is looking to really excel to the highest level I also have extensive experience here. I have helped many students through challenging entrance exams, provided wider mathematical enrichments (e.g. mathematical history, computing theory, learning mathematics from around the world etc.), and even taught several child prodigies taking exams or going to university early. I’m very knowledgeable about a huge variety of advanced areas of mathematics, and will be able to have proper discussions far beyond the syllabus when children ask the deep philosophical questions that curious minds wonder about. I can put all of this into a broad mathematical context and get into proper depth about how mathematicians think and the meaning(s) of ideas, and the rich world of mathematics beyond rote memorisation at school.

Daniel has been tutoring my son in A level Maths & Further Maths ahead of his exams this summer. Daniel is extremely enthusiastic, very knowledgeable and explains things clearly. His lessons are very enjoyable and they meet my son's needs, focussing on where he needs support. I would definitely recommend him as an A level tutor.

Daniel has given clear and constructive feedback and created a welcoming and effective learning space for my son. The 1:1 sessions have really helped my son gain in confidence and understand better the concepts, leading to an improvement in his grades. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Daniel.

Daniel has been helping Joe with his preparation for Cambridge STEP exam. Joe enjoys Maths and has found somebody in Daniel that shares this enjoyment and can help develop and encourage his curiosity for the subject. In Joe's words... Daniel is really friendly and has loads of cool maths tricks that help to solve problems. Thanks Daniel for all of your support.

From our first online meeting, I felt confident that Daniel would be able to stretch my mathematical muscles and help me to realise my potential. He keeps me thinking hard throughout our sessions, going through questions with an intellectual rigour, that keeps me on my toes. He is very personable, with a dry sense of humour, which I enjoy. I have total confidence in his mathematical knowledge and ability, and appreciate the way he will go through questions, often giving hints to help me reach the right answer. He is never impatient. I enjoy it when he expands on concepts where he thinks it would be beneficial for problem solving. For example, providing rudimentary proofs for commonplace formulae that A'Level teaching omits to explain, or dipping into philosophical areas of maths that go beyond the 'right' or 'wrong'. I would highly recommend Daniel to any student considering the challenge of STEP.
