Tutor Profile

Kate

Private English and French Tutor in Bordon

I am an inspiring and experienced professional tutor of school-educated and home-educated children and of university-level students. I tutor ENGLISH at GCSE, A-level, undergraduate and Masters level; FRENCH language to GCSE and French literature to GCSE, A-level, undergraduate and Masters level; LATIN and MATHS to Common Entrance. I have a very high success rate in coaching students to pass 11+, school ENTRANCE and Common Entrance exams. I have helped students write PERSONAL STATEMENTS following which they have been accepted to Cambridge and Durham universities, among others. Children who work with me typically achieve two grades higher at GCSE than they were predicted at school. I tutor students throughout the world, and am experienced at giving video lessons. As an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, achieving a Commendation, I am a qualified university teacher and am experienced at teaching and tutoring undergraduates and young adults. I hold a PhD in French literature.

I love tutoring - developing an encouraging relationship with a student who needs extra help or one who needs extra challenge, providing them with engaging lessons and homework that are focused on exactly the skills they need to develop, understanding the difficulties they face as learners - all in a warm and supportive environment. In addition, I am happy to act as mentor and facilitator, and to assist students with university personal statements and applications.

I hold a PhD in Literature, an MA with Distinction in English Literature and a BA honours in French Language and Literature, both from University of London. As a recent PhD student, I understand very well the challenges of being a learner. I use this personal experience to empathise with students, particularly following this challenging period of disrupted learning, and to tailor lessons and expectations so that each individual makes progress in a sustainable and supported way.

Teaching Experience

I have over 25 years' experience of teaching English Language and Literature, French, Latin and Maths as a professional tutor, university teacher and home-educator. Most of my new students find me by recommendation and I have an excellent reputation for my teaching style, thoroughness, and ability to help children exceed their own and their parents' expectations. I am experienced at teaching both one-to-one and in small groups, face to face and over FaceTime/WhatsApp/Zoom. My success rate is very high at tutoring students through their independent school entry exams, Common Entrance and 11+. I have 100% success rate with students re-sitting GCSEs. For a decade, I have also tutored undergraduates, giving individual help with essays and dissertations and I also have experience of running seminars for undergraduates and Foundation Year students and of marking their work. My expertise has enabled these young adults at university to acquire and practise new skills, achieve high marks and gain in confidence.

Tutoring Approach

I believe in inspiring and supporting learners of all ages. I provide fun and lively lessons and offer plenty of encouragement for students to enjoy learning, to desire to do their best and to grow in confidence and believe in themselves. I create a flexible, one-to-one service so that we create a mode and a pace of learning that suits the student, geared to their ultimate goal. I am happy to work to a school curriculum, to put together a package that targets the student's particular needs and I provide an alternative approach that puts extra fun back into learning. I am happy to use students' materials, to adapt them or to use my own. With young students, I like using games as a learning tool but am happy to use worksheets, too, if that is what students would like. With GCSE and pre-GCSE students, through guidance and support I encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning and applaud them for this. I see myself as part of the student-parent-school team and communicate easily and frequently with parents over the progress of their child, including liaising with school teachers. My work with university students provides a safe and nurturing environment that builds their skills in thinking and writing, and inspires them through their growing confidence to develop their academic voice, construct and develop a compelling argument, write with clarity and elegance and achieve high results.

Thank you for your very kind offer of help before next lesson. My son was very pleased with the lesson again today and he feels that he is learning from you. I like your approach, input and enthusiasm and it seems to be working really well. It’s a pity that there aren’t more ‘Kates’ out there! :-) Thanks again for another productive lesson.

Kate has been excellent! Although she only started working with our son 3 months before his GCSE exams, Kate was able to understand where we was very quickly, and then added immense value to his revision and exam preparations. He thoroughly enjoyed all his sessions with Kate, and we would recommend her to anyone looking for an English GCSE tutor. Thanks Kate!
