I am an ex teacher with 40 years of classroom experience and over 15 years of tutoring experience. I specialise in A level mathematics and further mathematics, for which I have been a principal examiner for over 20 years. I have a first class maths degree from Cambridge University and a PHDin maths education from Southampton University. I am also available for degree level mathematics provided it lies within my expertise.

I have taught in a variety of 11 to 18 schools and colleges, three as head of mathematics. I have taught all aspects of mathematics including statistics and mechanics. I have also edited textbooks and curriculum materials in mathematics.

I use zoom for online tuition. With my extensive experience I do not need notice of what my student would like discuss. If teaching a topic from scratch I like to start by establishing what they know of required prior content (for example the concept of gradient of a line before introducing differentiation). I like to use dynamic geometry software like geogebra where appropriate. If reviewing a topic I like to use past paper questions (‘I use a site called physics and maths tutor which has past papers from all boards as well as revision materials) but can also make up questions using my question setting experience. I try to motivate the teaching using history, applications etc as appropriate. My feedback from students highlights clarity of explanation and patience. For online tuition I offer a free introductory lesson. For home visits I charge a small fee to cover travel time and costs
