Tutor Profile

Blake

Private Biology and Chemistry Tutor in Brighton

I’m an experienced Science teacher and tutor specialising in GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as A-Level Biology and Chemistry. I have over 15 years of teaching experience and 10 years of experience as an examiner.

My particular strength is helping students understand how to turn their knowledge into marks. I believe that many students lose marks not because they don't understand the subject, but because they don't answer questions in the way examiners are looking for.

I’m passionate about helping students build both their confidence and their exam performance, and I aim to make lessons clear, engaging and focused on measurable progress.

Teaching Experience

I have over 15 years of experience teaching Science in schools, covering GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as A-Level Biology and Chemistry. I have taught students following AQA, OCR, Edexcel and iGCSE specifications.

Alongside my teaching experience, I have spent 10 years working as an examiner. This has given me a detailed understanding of mark schemes and the specific points examiners look for when awarding marks.

I have worked with students of a wide range of abilities, helping them prepare for class assessments, mocks and final examinations. My teaching has consistently been rated highly, and during a recent inspection, an Ofsted inspector described one of my lessons as the best he had seen.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring is centred around exam technique, past-paper practice and understanding mark schemes.

I start by identifying exactly where a student is losing marks, whether that is a gap in subject knowledge, difficulty interpreting questions, poor exam technique or simply not giving enough detail in their answers.

Lessons typically involve:

-Breaking down challenging exam questions -Working through past-paper questions -Understanding how mark schemes are applied -Learning how to structure answers to gain maximum marks -Identifying common mistakes and misconceptions -Targeted revision of weaker topics -Building confidence through regular exam practice

My aim is not simply to help students know more Science, but to help them use what they know effectively in an exam. This allows students to see clear and measurable improvements in their performance.
