Gerard

Private Maths and Further Maths Tutor in London

RATE REDUCED TO £25 PER HOUR OVER SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Qualified teacher and A-Level Examiner who loves Maths and Further Maths. Has achieved top grades and can help you do the same. (Also top grades in Sciences and a 1st from Imperial College in Computing.) Maths PGCE is Master`s Level. Continues to take current Exams as the Syllabi change.

I now specialise in A-Level Maths and Further Maths, where I am an Examiner, and tutees appreciate my ability to communicate my understanding. However, I am also happy to help with Maths at GCSE. As a Mensan, I also offer general 11+/13+ tuition, where parents appreciate my complementary literacy and reasoning skills. I helped my own son enter Mensa and gain entrance to Westminster School.

I have always loved the challenge of tests and joined Mensa and the ISPE accordingly. As such, I see exams and tests as enjoyable challenges rather than sources of stress. I would hope to help you see your tests in the same light.

I also love chess - with my help, my son has won School Chess Prizes.

I also love poetry.

In this quiet period, I currently charge £25 per hour. When things get busier my normal rate is £40 per hour. After you have purchased my contact details, I give the first hour half-price.

I thank you for your interest, and hope to hear from you.

Teaching Experience

I have been tutoring students of Edexcel, OCR, OCR MEI and AQA since 2014, as well as students of IB Maths. I have tutored students from schools including Westminster School, Eltham College, Colfe's, St. Dunstan's, Dulwich College and the Kent Grammar Schools. I have tutored younger students from schools including City of London and Bromley High, and have helped younger children excel at entrance exams to Westminster School, City of London, Trinity College and Victoria College (Jersey). I have also tutored my own son from an early age.

Tutoring Approach

I am happy working closely to the specifications of the exam boards, using material they have approved. At the start of the year I would generally support my tutees in their schoolwork, rather than giving them an alternative scheme of work. As exams approach I would generally help prepare my tutees by working through past questions with them. My tutees are the bosses, however, and they tell me what they want to cover each session.

For 11+/13+, I provide book-based teaching rather than assessment. I select books in agreement with parents, and then impart my knowledge and understanding to children as I review their homework. However, I do not agree with the modern emphasis on continual assessment. I do not believe that an object gets heavier the more times you weigh it.

Much of my tutoring is now online, for which I use a graphics tablet for annotation, with my comprehensive revision websites.

Gerard is clearly passionate about maths. He has been really helpful preparing my daughter for her upcoming GCSEs, including tough marking to prepare her for what is required in the actual exam. He is also a very kind person.

Tutor response

Thank you for your kind words. Your daughter aims for perfection and learns quickly - teaching her is a pleasure. I'm hoping she continues maths at A-Level.

Gerard has been tutoring our son for the last 5 months in A Level maths. Our son has SEN (ASD, ADHD and Dyspraxia), is often very tired from school and can be difficult to engage. Gerard has been very patient with him and shows tenacity to ensure our son is well prepared in terms of completing homework and being ready for tests. He has a wealth of knowledge in maths and has helped us as parents to also understand the context around A level maths and what will be expected/our son needs to be prepared on for the exams.

Tutor response

That's a great review - thank you. You are very supportive as parents, so that makes my work easier.

Since November 2023 Gerard has been an excellent Maths tutor for our sons (aged 17 & 14). He is always prompt and friendly in communications with us and has proved to be a knowledgeable and skilled teacher for our boys. Both the boys (one about to sit A levels and the other in his first year of GCSEs) are really comfortable and happy with him. He is engaging and responsive to their individual needs, and the result has been a noticeable increase in their Maths confidence and ability. It was especially lovely for us to see our younger son, who is not very talkative at all, chatting quite happily with Gerard from the first lesson. We are grateful to Gerard and would not hesitate to recommend him as a tutor.

Tutor response

Gerard helped my daughter with her A-level Maths for approximately 6 months prior to her final exams. He was reliable and punctual and his approach to teaching was practical and thorough. Testament to his teaching methods she achieved an A and secured a place at the University of Oxford.

Tutor response

Thank you for your kind review. I'm particularly proud of my Oxbridge tutees.
